1992 D Off center Die

I have a 1992 D that has been struck off center and looks like a different material. Whats up with this?

Welcome Wynne Sharp to the forum. A picture would definitely help. A off-center coin would be with both sides off center in the same direction, one side only is a mis-aligned die.

Hi and WELCOME,

The coin is not off-center struck as the reverse is perfectly centered. The obverse looks to be struck by a very, very slightly misaligned die. The coin would not command a premium for two reasons.

A misaligned die strike has to have a fair portion of the detail missing. This coin does not appear to have any detail missing.

The next thing to mention about the coin is that the plating has been compromised by some kind of post Mint damage. Again, not an error.

Its copper colored. Looks a great deal different than my other pennies.

 

A 1992 D cent is copper-plating over a zinc core. The color of the copper plating can vary depending upon impurities in the batch of copper used for the plating. It also is effected by whatever caused the damage.

There really is nothing unusual about your coin that would add any value to it.
