I hate it when people don't pluralize ancient coin names correctly. If you have one denarius, then you acquire another, you have two denarii. Not denariuses. If you have a siglos, then get another, sigloi. Tessera/tesserae. Quadrans/quadrantes. Semis, semisses.

Pronunciation also peeves me too. Technically, saying "sester-she" is acceptable. But "sestertii" is the proper Latin way! Its even harder with a drachma. "dram"!

Actually Kent its a common mistake, several years ago I was talking with a Navajo Indian & I asked him what was proper,Native American or Indian, he looked at me and asked where I was born & I replied the U.S.A , he looked back at me & said you are a Native American I'am an Indian, true story ;)

Yep, that's what I meant, 'from a mint'. Antique furniture, unmarred vintage household goods, clothes, comicbooks, etc. are not 'from a mint'... "as if fresh from a mint" is metaphorical and highly subjective, not the sort of accuracy more advanced collectors should go by. Using 'mint' that way seems more a colloquialism / informal reference at best.

I think society is so afraid of offending anyone they want everyone to be PC. I have a real good friend Cerable Palsy (which I can't spell) and he says he isn't handicaped, challenged or cripple I said well what are you and he said, a man in a wheel chair with a PHD in education. I said OK so your smarter than me you want race. You got treat people the way you want to be treated and stop worrying about how everybody wants you to treat others.

Yeah, I don't know why the term indian is offensive. It's been used for centuries. Nobody in modern times came up with it to purposely offend anyone and it's origins are harmless. Wasn't it some explorer that landed here and thought they had found India, who started calling the local inhabitants indians?

Basically an accidental name that stuck. It's so widely used and recognized that it doesn't make sense to abandon the term at this point. I'll call anybody whatever they want to be called though.

I hate it in when people call it a cent instead of a penny. Common cents are not so common and pennies fall from heaven:)

Besides coins, I collect comicbooks (mostly from the 40's and 50's). Some years back, a 10 point grading system was incorporated by the two major comicbook grading services (CGC and PGX). Both of these services "slab" comicbooks, just like coins. The term "mint" and "near mint" has been used for comics as long as I can remember; I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but the term "mint" has become a generic term in the collectible market, something like "NITB" (new in the box). the breakdown is as follows:

    10.0: Gem Mint (GM)
    9.9: Mint (MT)
    9.8: Near Mint/Mint (NM/MT)
    9.6: Near Mint+ (NM+)
    9.4: Near Mint (NM)
    9.2: Near Mint- (NM-)
    9.0: Very Fine/Near Mint (VF/NM)
    8.5: Very Fine+ (VF+)
    8.0: Very Fine (VF)
    7.5: Very Fine- (VF-)
    7.0: Fine/Very Fine (FN/VF)
    6.5: Fine+ (FN+)
    6.0: Fine (FN)
    5.5: Fine- (FN-)
    5.0: Very Good/Fine (VG/FN)
    4.5: Very Good+ (VG+)
    4.0: Very Good (VG)
    3.5: Very Good- (VG-)
    3.0: Good/Very Good (GD/VG)
    2.5: Good+ (GD+)
    2.0: Good (GD)
    1.8: Good- (GD-)
    1.5: Fair/Good (FR/GD)
    1.0: Fair (FR)
    0.5: Poor (PR)

It drives me nuts to see or hear every true die variety, damaged coin or a coin in a particular die state called an "error" .

Errors are errors:) The others are something else:)
