I just recieved my silver proof set from the mint and the Samoan .25 has a "ghost" o. I've never seen an error in a proof set ..heard of die cracks but to have just an outline of the "o" in Samoa I am shocked. Is this an isolated incident and should I have this coin graded by NGC..Since it is a Silver Proof and almost, if not definately a DCameo-69(dare I say 70), the error is easily recognized and observed... I'll down-load pictures later since It is still in the case and my digital shows too much reflection...Any thoughts suggestions..how rare is this occurance. Thanx Shotgunsteve
Here are the pictures... How rare is this ..should I get it graded? By whom? and is this a rare error?
Pics are kinda small. Is the O raised like the rest of the letters, just not frosted? Or is the O barely raised like it was struck through a clogged die? Interesting find; it looks like someone in QC should have easily spotted it.
Is the O raised..... The O is not raised at all like a clogged die and even the rt side of the tree barely came out ..I'll try to load a larger pict
A Clogged Die thats a Proof coin isn't that rare? It may indeed be a clogged die. Not only is it not frosted, as you can see in this picture. a signifigant part of the tree isn't raised either. The 'O' has been stuck(striked?)(its not missing like a 22 Lincoln) its just even with the rest of the surface (its unraisedand unfrosted) ..Once again is it worth the investment to get the coin graded? ..I haven't seen any others on any other proofs ....doesn't appear to be common...are there other examples out there .. similar--- that are missing letters or ghosted on proof coins .....of any denomination?
Welcome to the forum shotgunsteve. It seems the mint's quality control is going down hill, can't wait to see what others say.
I thought you might like to know, Your coin is listed on Wexler's coins and die varieties. Picture is copyrighted. http://doubleddie.com/1936.html
Sorry Rockdude not the same type of error the picture and description states that it is a strike through error ..I must admit I thought it was the same since I saw this article when I searched for Samoa errors but alas it does not have the other errors such as the field errors and design ..my error involves just the O and the upper part of the tree but thanks for your help and advice ..don't hesitate if you find additional info thanks again
They are probably related though. I bet after the struck thru was cleared, the die was not repolished and your coin was struck.
Good point ! But isn't it strange that after the 'struck' was indeed cleared ..and left the mint evident from the wexler photo ..The mint wasn't careful with my coin....
Not to take away from your find but I've heard that this Samoa quarter isn't all that popular as far as quarters go. I think I read it in coinnews.com. I've seen alot of banged up spotted coins come from the mint but I haven't run across something like this. Nice bonus for sure! :thumb:
as far a popularity go..who cares HAHAHA...but interestingly ..it would not be considering the recent earthquake(tusanmi?!)...New question ..What would be a fair starting price on ebay..Silver proof error....sold as the set of silver quarters including the error....any ideas suggestions......all would be appreciated...
I don't know that much about ebay, I'm fairly new to it but I'm sure someone else knows. How much y'all??
