Pictures are too small for me to see anything - can you get a close up?

Tried a copy/paste and enlarge but the resolution falls apart, can't see anything on the I of UNITED. It does appear to be a 1857, Type of 1857 though. Rick Snow's book makes no mention of any variety involving the I.

It might be "Longacres effect" from die deterioration if it is what I think I see. Larger area is needed. You might try just shooting that area through a loupe.

Why is it that so many of the Thumbnails folks post won't enlarge?
They open but the image is the same size as the thumbnail.
Do I have something set wrong?

Can't tell anything about the FE from the image.

I can't see the I either but that is a nice piece. Is it AU?

No, CT only allows a certain size of images, a change that occured in the last few months. If you attache your images to a post they will be reduced, if you link your images to another image host site they will be larger, able to be enlarged. Try using photopucket, picasaweb, or someother file host, attach the URL and it should be fine.

There are some 'test' threads and image upload Q&A threads in the support & feedback section if you do a search.

Looks like either a die chip or a cud.

That doesn't work either unless you already have a Picasa account.

However, I used a magnifying glass and just held it up to my computer screen. It does look like a simple die chip, no biggie in terms of "error" value.

One thing that works sometimes if you are trying to see a small image on the screen and you are running XP is to use the magnifyer program.

Click on START, select all programs, accessories, accessibility, and then Magnifier. It opens a bar window across the top of your screen with a magnified view of where ever your cursor is. You can click and drag to increase the size of the magnifier bar if needed, and you can change the magnification of the bar as well.

There is a magnifier in vista also.

Not surprised, but I haven't worked with Vista.

Be carefull of Picasa. I found out the hard way that if you already have some photo programs on your computer, Picasa may not be compatible with that. I tried it and ended up taking my computer in for an overhaul.
As to your thing by the i it does appear to be just a cud type of piece. No big thing and actually someone looking for a really nice high graded cent might well tell you a reduced price for that.

No, it has nothing to do with you. I have explained it in several other threads but I will do so again. It is because of the size of the image file that they start out with.

The forum software automatically reduces the size of all pics to be withing our limits - 250kb being the max size. So when they start off with an image that is say 1mb or larger, it gets reduced and what you see here is what you get.

In this case what the OP needs to do is to reduce the file size down to at least close to our limit, then the pic will show up full size when you click on it, or sometimes click first and then double click on the new image.

Or they are using a small pic to begin with.

Or they are using the wrong file type like a .bmp file. They need to use .jpg files.

All of this is explained in several sticky threads throughout the forum.

For some reason the various programs do not act the same when resizing pictures. The easiest way I found to get a large picture is to use Microsoft's Image resizer. It is available on the Microsoft site. After installing the program you right click on the picture you want to resize and pick the size. I use the 'large' format and it seems to work well most of the time.
