I have received all in rolls from the bank except the 1970 dates. I consider this the toughest one for the Kennedy set.

I'm just down to both 1970 issues and maybe 5 proofs before 1991 - I've been hesitant to really track down all the modern proofs though.

Yeah, if you exclude the proofs, the 1970-D and 1987-P and 1987-D would only be found in circulation if you get lucky and somebody spent some Mint Set coins. Same comment for the post-2001 issues, most of which the Mint only sold in rolls to collectors.

Besides my Registry Sets, I have put together a hand-assembled Dansco album set, all circulation strikes, proofs, everything, by busting up proof and mint sets one at a time over the past 30 years. A labor of love, I can tell you, and a wonderful set. Only raw set I still own.

    1984-P in MS67 PCGS
    1984-D in MS67 PCGS

Tough, tough coins. The 1984-P is Pop 22/0, the 1984-D is Pop 12/0.

At this rate I should be #4 All-Time Finest before long. (I'll never make #1!) What are your latest finds?

I just found this thread. Now I must run the the provided links, so ThanX.

My Mom had a large stash (about 40) that I've never looked through other than seperate the 64's and bicents from the "others".

1964 PR68DCAM PCGS, another toughie to replace a 1964 PR69DCAM that I sold via Heritage. I know it was a higher grade but I never liked it after I bought it.

I'm still looking for a PCGS 1972 No FG. Any takers?

  11. I just found this thread. I am working on a set of them but it's slow going. They just simply do not circulate and as such, I can't get them in change. My main bank refuses to stock them, although they always have a few in the drawers, they don't carry rolls. Luckily, the bank I use for Paypal (a national chain) DOES stock them and I was able to procure my first roll recently. Most of them were beat up very badly, I think they were used in casinos, there are a few in close range. Many, many scratches and dings, it looks like a weedwacker attacked them! Also, the edges are worn smooth on a lot of them. Some in the roll were nice though, and 3 of them ended up in my collection, all as upgrades to coins I had, none were dates I didn't have.

But the best in that roll was a strikethrough error, and amazingly still in great shape, too.

I am going to be going through more rolls soon, keeping what I need for my collection and spending the rest. I like to leave them as tips or even just spend them outright, although I rarely buy anything cheap enough to use change. I always have a few on me.

Whereas clad dimes I am only a few short of the set, and clad Quarters the same way, all from circulation, for the Kennedy halves, I am missing 29 from before 2001 and ALL after 2001.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I just recently starting getting a few Kennedy's. As you all know, I'm crazy about the Franklin's, but my business strike set is nearing completion so I am starting to branch out to other series of half dollars. I'm thinking of picking up Franklin proofs soon, and I'm picking up Kennedy proofs here and there. I couldn't care less about 70's, 69Dcams are just fine for me. I've got 6 Kennedy proofs now, you can see them here: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=68345

I love this series. It has alot of coins to collect, yet most are within almost everyones budget. I think this series is unappriciated, and hope when it comes into favor I have upgraded most of my collection to high grade coins. Anyone know of any dealers that specialize in kennedys raw / slabbed please post the links!

that is funny, I never thought of that. But it is one heavy, thick book. I have some of the latter silver ones left... It's really slow to fill in those last slots... I hope to have the proof series done by year's end.. phew!

  17. Wow, 7 pounds of half dollars...very cool! I don't have that many of them and don't know what a lot of them togther feels like. I do know that keeping four or more of them in my pants pocket weighs it down, though :)

I only have two proof Kennedy halves, the BiCentennial and the 2009 Silver.

Agreed! My set is getting quite heavy to pick up!

I need about 6 + all the modern silver proofs which I'm not to motivated to get at $20-$40 a piece.

The Kennedy set with Proofs is a real monster.

I put together a mostly BU set of just business P's and D's from 64- 2009 including the SMS ones. I never had a desire to collect all the silver proofs. The Kennedy halves are nice but they aren't at the top of my collecting list.

One interesting thing about all the recent ones not issued for circulation is the low mintages. The lowest of probably anything the mint is producing. In 2008 they made 1.7 million P's and 1.7 million D's. 3.4 million TOTAL! That's it. As in if 2 million people in the world desired to own a complete Kennedy set, more than 300k would be out of luck!!
(Weren't people getting excited over there being only 36 million nickels minted in 2009?)
While there should never be a shortage of high grade examples since they aren't circulating, don't expect people to be giving them away down the road. These may have more collector value some day than the older, higher mintage ones.

These newer ones will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. Just try buying BU examples from the 80s and 90s with much higher mintage figures. You can't get 2009 Kennedys at face value right now. In 10 years, 5-10 bucks a pair wouldn't surprise me at all. The sellers hoarding all the rolls will site their low mintages of course.

It's much easier to keep up with them as they come out and at least pay close to face. Rolls from the mint are 0.82 cents per coin plus shipping. As cheap as they'll ever be for sure.
