1804 Silver dollar

I have in my possession an 1804 Silver dollar, and I want to know the value of the coin. These are the descriptions about the coin.

observe : drapped bust
reverse : heraldic eagle
diameter : 45mm
weight : 44 to 45grms
thickness : 2 1/2mm
edge : hundred cent one dollar (or) unit
stars : 52
echo : present

Origin:China?

 

I recommend comparing it to the authentic dollars at the American History Museum of the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Be sure to let us know what you find out.

About 2 or 3 dollars - at least that is what I think my father paid for his.

 

Origin: Kachin State, Burma

 

Easy - it is a fake and worth 2 - 3 dollars unless it is solid silver which my fathers wasn't.

 

Must be a new variety--a DISCOVERY COIN???

 

Well, 50 states plus Puerto Rico and Washington DC does equal 52.

 

How many states in 1804... maybe 15 or so ?

some experts from europe have already varified the coin as a genuine one and offered to buy it for an undisclosed amount of money for it. so, i want to know its current value.

 

none of us can say fake or not with 100% certainty until we at least see some pictures, sure there is only about a one in a million chance of the coin being genuine, but you never know

I believe all known examples are accounted for. Last sale: about $4.14 million dollars, unless of course it's a proof restrike...then it's only worth $1.2 million dollars according to the 2010 Red book.

 

Some possibilities exist;

If it is a Class I it might be the dollar that was part of the duDpont robbery in October of 1967. If it is that coin then you probably should contact a police authority to begin the process of returning it to its rightful owners.

With the diameter the OP noted, it is much more likely fake.

 

Yeah--for a genuine 1804 $1. The OP shouldn't get his hopes too high here--it's not like we're going to authenticate, buy it or anything else.

 

Who are these experts ?

This reminds me of the last scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark"...

The most recent sale I am aware of was spring 2009. An impaired proof PR58 sold for $2.3 million. The only eye appeal it has is the date ! The rest is mediocre.

 

In all fairness, nobody really knows for sure how many restrikes were made for collectors, as no records were kept. However, a picture would tell us which restrike, if genuine, it is. Chances of an example being out there just now surfacing is very difficult to believe.
