Sometimes, people put cents in acid, and this can result. If it appears grainy on both sides, it may be an acid bath coin.

Acid. In a high school or college science lab OR in a printmaking facility that deals with intaglio processes. I have personally seen it in a printmaking lab, students just get curious about the copper plating when they find out about it and drop a penny in the acid bath and retrieve it later...
