Just got this 1913 2 Mark Bavarian Proof Pattern. It is a rare Pattern, and its my first German Pattern.
Karl Goetz!!! I really love his medals also. I didn't really know much about him until I purchased and researched this medal. It is a 1910 silver medal by Karl Goetz commemorating 100 years of the death of Queen Louise of Prussia. Although it appears to me that he used the portrait by Joseph Grassi for the obverse of the medal. I really think Karl Goetz was a fantastic medalist.
That piece which Goetz designed "for" Bavaria is OK as a medal, I think, but would have been odd for a coin. German coins, even today, have a heraldic depiction of the eagle, not anything like that. Also, I find it difficult to keep the technically good medalist Goetz apart from the pretty awful propaganda piece designer that he was. But if anybody likes his works, fine with me. Christian
Beautiful pattern but, like said below, as an actual coin it would look a little weird. And dctjr80, its funny that you would show that medal, because I was just looking at the Goodman collection of Goetz medals and that was one that I gawked at for a while.
This is another Goetz pattern that was one of my best buys in recent years, a $10 purchase: I agree with Chrisild though, Goetz was something of a chameleon with politics - his work reflected the current political climate in Germany.
I'm trying to put togather a collection of German coins during the period of 1500 to 1918. Which I'm including Patterns and medals into the collection. But, I understanding what your saying. I know all about the eagle design used on German coins during the time period. Yes, I also think Goetz rev design is not anywhere as nice as the eagle that was used on coins during that time period. But again, I'm including Patterns and metals into my set.
