Sometimes, people put cents in acid, and this can result. If it appears grainy on both sides, it may be an acid bath coin.

I always hear about these acid baths. Why exactly do people do this? Are they attempting to clean them this way?

Many people do it as part of science experiments in high schools. Many are tampered with because some people just have too much time on their hands:)

Your coin has been acid dipped:)

    Thanks,
    Bill

Acid. In a high school or college science lab OR in a printmaking facility that deals with intaglio processes.

I have personally seen it in a printmaking lab, students just get curious about the copper plating when they find out about it and drop a penny in the acid bath and retrieve it later...
