I have a tough choice to make in a few weeks. The local coin show is coming up in a few weeks, and for the first time in many years, I do not have any extra chnge laying around. After being layed off for a short period, I found a different job. The problem is I took a sizable pay cut, and lost a few benefits I perhaps took for granted. Now, my question is do I go to the show and hope just talking to other fellow collectors will be a good replacement for adding to my collection, or will it make me more likely to buy things I should not? Just looking for a little insight in these trying times...
Sorry to hear about your troubles, a lot of that on the east side of the lake as well. I'd go to the show. It's an educational opportunity at the very least. Call it window shopping or something. Maybe find a useful coin book for a few dollars if you can't resist something. Besides, it's just fun:smile
Well it is always good to chat with the "old timers" But I can never walk out empty handed so if you are like me, you better stay away! Until you can fund the addiction!! or maybe you have something to trade/sell???
I always have something I should trade or sell. The problem is, I get attached to things. No matter how bad the coin is, or even if I've purchased a better example to replace it, I can't seem to bring myself to dump it!!! Does anyone else have this problem/sickness?
Even if I couldn't afford to buy a single coin, I wouldn't pass up a local show if I had the time to go. With a room full of nice coins of various types, where else can you go and look at them all in hand and learn about many coins you may have never seen before. Just don't tell the dealers you have no money to spend, then they may not let you take as close of a look
I know what you are going through, money is tight right now for all of us. I would go anyway. Even if you don't buy a single thing, you can still look and learn. If you have become friends with other collectors or dealers, you can see them. And who knows, you might just make a new friend there, because you had more time to talk because of the less time spent working on deals.
I would go and just buy some cheap coins to fill in holes to some of your old albums maybe. you don't always have to buy high grade slab stuff. I read about all the coins show many of you guys go to and I'm jealous. Tucson, Arizona barely has any coin shows at all but it does have quite a few good shops at least.
I'd say if you have at least $30 to $50 dollars and you can stick to that budget then I would go. If you can't stick to that amount then it may be a good idea to sit this one out. :thumb:
Oh I don't have a problem dumping extras. It's getting a fair price that's the problem. There are a few dealers who will take my coins in trade towards something in their case. If you don't want to miss the show bring along something to trade. And just see if you can work out a barter or trade. That will be a challenge for you which may turn out to be a fun day after all.
Extremely bad!!! Even when I roll search my wife has to return the non keepers to the bank. I haven't been to a show yet but I would recommend going just to chat and gain some knowledge. I personally would remove all my credit cards from my wallet and leave them in my safe and only bring what ever cash I could afford to spend. That way I do not become entranced by the shiny little discs and break my budget. Kie
I'd stay home. The want of all those coins will just make you feel worse. Of course, I'm a cave dweller when I'm depressed.
Tough dilemma. It would be very difficult not to go and wallow in all the glory of being surrounded by coins. On the other hand, the odds of you seeing something you'd really like to have are high. Then you will make an emotional decision to buy something you really can't afford (especially if you won't sell something to buy another). I think, for me, I'd have to stay home.
Tough question. If I had no funds, I'd skip the show. As mentioned, if I could scrap together $30 or more that I could afford to spend, I'd be there. I love a show.
The show is in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin on October 24. If you'd like more information, check out the show calendar on www.numismatistsofwisconsin.com. If you go, I'll be the one walking around with a two year old girl, not buying much!!!
Looks like you've made your mind up between starting this post last night and this morning. Have fun!
Your kidding of course. In the Illinois area there are 4 coin shows a Month, every Month and even on all Holidays. Check out Google and type in Coin Shows in Illinois. I go to most of them. All are within 15 miles of my house. I don't like the one in Lemont though so that is the one I seldom go to. All are on Sundays. 1st Sunday is Lemont. 2nd Sunday is Countryside. 3rd Sunday is Itasca. 4th Sunday is Rowling Meadows. See you there.
