Re-grading but loosing FS designation...

I have a 2006 1oz gold Buffalo. It has been graded as PF69 UC. The coin also has a "First Strikes" designation. After having it checked by "coin dealers" and friends, I decided that I wanted to be re-graded; hoping for a PF70. I forwarded an email to NGC (original graders) and explained to them the situation. To my surprise when they answered my email they informed me that they would re-grade the coin but that they could not "carry over" the FS designation. Weird! It was them who were the original graders and it was them who designated the coin as a FS. I was wishing for a PF70 grade along with the FS, but now I do not know if it is worth loosing the FS status. There is no garantee that the coin will make a perfect PF70 or for that matter a PF69. What do you think? Please advice!

The reason as to why I wanted the PF70 is because I have four other gold coins and they all have come back with a 70.

Thats tough, I don't know what you should do. If anything, I'd stay with the 69 FS, it most likely will not come back a 70 and you will just have a 69 (no FS). The choice is 69 FS or 69. Keep what you have, IMO

 

I would keep as is as well. Maybe sell it and get the FS 70?

 

The chances of your obtaining a 70 if you resubmit the one you have are probably very slim. Coupled with the loss of the first strike designation, that makes it a bad gamble. If you have to have one graded 70, buy it as such and sell the one you have.

 

The risks are too great. Chances are, a tiny little tick is going to show up and prevent the MS 70 grade and the FS designation. If it were my coin and my scenario, I would keep my MS 69 First-Strike.

Honestly, is anyone still buying into the FS designation anymore, now that we all know there is no way anyone could tell for sure? The gamble, like Mark said, is in spending the money in hoping it will grade higher even though the chances are pretty slim. I'd leave it as is.

Thanks for the information. I have been curious about what NGC regrading or re slabbing their first strike coins. I have a Buffalo ms 2006 70 first strike which I was considering having re slabbed because it has a slight crack in the white part of the slab and is not sitting flat in the slab. Of course my situation is a little different since NGC would not have to reprint the Paper insert(?).

I agree keep the FS, just for the semi novelty .
