anyone know how this coin got toned like it did in about 5 years from minting? or am I over thinking that it's too soon for a coin to tone? and that it's just a freak thing that happens more then I think.

I'm no expert, but it sure looks like that was clearly hit with a blowtorch or something. Seems obvious.

My state quarters in a cardboard album are starting to tone.

So I can believe that the nickel is toning.

    Could be NT

Last year I bought 7 two roll P/D Keelboat boxes.

I have kept a few unopened, sold a couple, unopened, open a couple to search.

I found what I was told SINTERED coins scattered through three rolls.

Not as extreme or focal as yours, but definitely natural in my case as the copper~brown color "wash" as someone called arrived rolled & boxed from the mint.

    Nickels can tone fast!

While going through change, I keep the AU/BU nickels. Well, I had about 30 and decided to put them in a plastic tube. To fill up the empty space (only 30 nickels) in the tube, I crumpled up some of that yellow legal pad paper and stuffed it in the tube.

After about 4 momths all the nickels were starting to turn yellow/golden. Not a pretty tone, I might add!

Now, whether this is AT or NT, I will not go there.

    Art Numismatist?

probably a combination of exposure to the air/elements and whatever is in the paper they're wrapped in.

anyone know how this happened? and is it considered AT or NT? I think it's NT from the fact I just housed the coin and did nothing to it...
and the most important reason I want to know is this would be my 1st toned coin and thus also my 1st NT toned coin :D it's pretty sweet to look at :hail:
I also wonder what this coin could also be worth? whether it's common or a one of a kind
