Not 100% sure what I'm looking at here, really looks like a 1945 S/S with the RPM due south. Am I looking at this correct? If so I'm surprised that it's not in the CPG as bold as the RPM seems. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
It looks like an RPM to me, too! You have to keep in mind that the CPG can't list every known variety. Otherwise, the 2-volume set would be gi-normous.
Looks like Wexler's 1945-S WRPM-001 "Best of variety" On www.doubleddie.com and RPM-002 on variety vista
Man I have to get better at finding this stuff on line.... Thanks for the help. Looks just like how you called it.
See, this is why the so-called "Cherry-pickers" is not the most useful book.... it supposedly lists the "most valuable" or "desirable" varieties, but in no-way ever claims to be a complete reference. It is incredibly incomplete. I'd never use it to try to identify anything, and I'd never recommend anyone spend money on it. It just isn't worth it. In my opinion, this coin absolutely does not match RPM-002. The separation south on this coin is not as far, and RPM-002 does not show the distinct north separation on the tail (RPM-002 shows more separation on the bottom loop). I'd describe this as an S/S/S triple Repunched mintmark, and in my opinion it looks like a new discovery. Submit it to James Wiles at Coneca for credit, because this looks like a legit new triple RPM.
I really don't see that this is a S/S/S. But I would definitely suggest that this one gets sent to Wiles. The worst that can happen is that it is added as a die stage B or C. For RPM-002 Neat find @Joe Campbell
The CPG is one of the best books in coin collecting, and I highly recommend it to all. It was never supposed to list every single die variety; as mentioned, it lists the most dramatic and/or popular ones. Other websites are great for listing all known die varieties, but with the info included in the CPG listings, and appendix's, it is an excellent book, especially for most of the newer members here. Money VERY well spent, imo.
