I know its not really a coin, but figured someone on here might know what this is. I picked it up recently at a second hand store. It says "One Troy Pound" on the side, and a serial #. I tried looking it up on google with no luck. Any info would be great. Thanks
I belive if it doesn't say that it is .999 silver on it, that it is a silver plated paper weight. I have seen other that look like $100 dollar bills, Bison bills and soforth.
These are a novelty item not used to reproduce notes. If they were used to produce notes they would need to be mirror images. The items are stamped out just like a silver round or a coin is.
is there any way to test if it is fully silver or not? I tried sticking a magnet to it and it didn't stick. Maybe its stainless or nickel if not silver. I would really like to know if it is solid or not.
The it's probably not silver. If you didn't pay ~$90 for it, then it probably isn't silver. If I had to place a bet, I'd go with the paperweight myself, but...
The only other thing I would know to try would be to scrape the edge and see if its solid silver or plated.
One fairly simple way would be to weigh it on a very accurate scale. If it doesn't weigh 12 troy ounces (382.72 grams, slightly under 13.5 ounces av.) you have your answer. If it does, the next step would be to see if it has the correct volume for pure silver of that weight. (There's no way the .001 or less of other material could significantly affect the weight.) My money is on the paperweight suggestion.
I've seen some similar things on eBay. link1 link2 link3 Did you look at the edge of the bar? It might be marked.
