Obsoletes are addictive, I just bought one too, and it should be in the mail box this morning so I have to drive into town to get it. They represent a lot of history, coupled with great designs and a great value, since they usually are not expensive.

Where would someone look to find them not expensive and guaranteed genuine?

most reputable sellers would be a safe bet. Ebay would be sketchy but possible.

Nice note RickieB, i do like the back... it has a sort of phsychodelic kinda look lol. I thought most of those notes were blank on the reverse... i know some had scraps from older notes or printings of different things as alot of times the paper was reused... but i didnt know they actauuly had printed designs on them :)

Daggar, the notes with printed reverses cost more to print of course. This being an era of a lot of different notes forgery was very common. A printed reverse was even more insurance against forgeries.

But cost in printing is very important, there are economies of scale as a factor too, think of Canal Bank and how large it was, and how many notes that they printed - obviously from the huge number that remain today as remainders. Many of the remainders to not have printed reverses, whilst the later ones have the ubiquitous orange reverses.

One of the fascinating aspects of the obsolete era is the different opinions on what constituted a note that was difficult to forge, and as a result there are some amazing notes with wonderfully intricate designs - all in the hopes of averting forgeries.

Maryland/Flordia is an area of Obsoletes that I like to collect.
Heritage recently did have a few nice Obsoletes to select from...
This note is one that interested me and I have seen it listed as much more than what I paid for it...anyway, it is part of the obsoletes...

SM..there were a few DeSoto notes last night..but the one with the nice Lady had ink stains showing through...post your note when you get..would love to see it.

On my way home from Montreal...rained since I arrived, now it is clear with blue skies...no golf this trip!!

Very nice obsolete RickieB, I was looking at a few of them on Heritage last night, although I've passed my coin/paper budget for this month so it will have to wait for a while lol. Hope my fellow Canadians treated you well! Too bad about the golf.
