What is the best US coin?
This was the question posed to the staff and I yesterday from a class of sixth graders.

So I thought it would be nice to get your answers.

Would it be the obsolete coinage? (half cent, two cent, three cent, half dime, twenty cent)?

Would it be the current Presidential coinage honoring our greatest leaders?

Could it be the Lincoln Cent with more varieties than regular issues?

Could it be the Morgan dollar with their nice design and silver content?

Could it be the state quarters with their mass appeal?

Could it be the artistic beauty of the Buffalo, Walking Liberty, or St. Gaudens?

Could it be the Peace Dollar representing peace after the war to end all wars?

Could it be the early gold coins made from the hills of North Carolina and Georgia?

Could it be the ultra rare coins such as the 33 Saint or 1913 Liberty Nickels?

Could it be the special presentation pieces such as the 1804 Dollar, or 1792 Half Dismes?

Could it be the most dramatic errors such as the 43 copper cent or the sacagawea mule?

These are just some of the most quoted answers to this question.

    My answer to the class:

The best US coin in my opinion is the one that inspires you to become more than just a collector. The coin that sparks the interest in your heart as well as your mind. It is the coin that when you hold it, will always remind you of why you collect coins.

Hard to say which is best. Actually, I can find something positive to say about every issue.
If I had to pick, I'd have to go with the coins produced on screw presses. These coins were actually made by American workers. They symbolize the blood, sweat and tears of the American loborer, the very backbone of our great nation.
One of my personal favorites is seen here:

1808 Capped Bust Half (click here)

Hands down, Type III Liberty $20! Gorgeous coins, best US coin ever designed by a mile, isn't Miss Liberty pretty?

but the 1915 Panama-Pacific $50 coin is an nice second.

    Such a hard decision....
When I spot a coin that has been taken care of well and it is 100+ years old, I think that is the best. I think it is the best when I feel the weight of a silver dollar in my hand. I love to hold something as small as a nickel 3 cent piece and think about what 3 cents was worth in 1847...

I guess I would have to say Indian Head Pennies.
They are beautiful and fun to collect.
I love Ms. Liberty with the headress.

well, my vote goes to the buffalo nickel

a great american coin icon that symbolizes an era

it is only rivaled by the walking liberty silver half and the standing liberty quarter

i was jumping with joy when I found out Jody was giving me both the buffalo and the walker.
