I found this 1914-D at a local antique mall. It was a really good deal. I couldn't pass it up. It seems to have nearly all the original luster left. A little bit of a weak strike. I'm thinking about sending it in. Do you guys think it might be worth it and what do you think it would grade at? Any and all honest opinions appreciated!

The pictures have a little too much glare for me, but it is a beautiful coin. It may be the glare, but is the end of the tail okay?

Did you check-out the guy's website I mentioned to you?

If you're confident that it hasn't been cleaned, then "Yes", it has enough value to merit being slabbed.

    I use the 10% rule.
If it costs less than 10% of the value of a coin to get it slabbed, then it is reasonable to get it slabbed.

Anybody else? I'm pretty sure I'm going to send it in and see what happens. Was hoping for a few more opinions though.

    I would slab it.

Nice looking, what did you pay for it?
    As an unc or more?

I am not a slab person. If that was mine it would go into an album. Just can't see a pile of plastic instead of a nice completed collection that you could see all at once. In other words, don't get it slabbed. About a decent MS-63 and would be a $400 to $550 range in value but as long as your not selling it, why worry about a slab or price.

Reverse hipbone (often first site of wear) and rims make me think AU although the photo makes it difficult to say. There is something low on the Indian's cheek which is strange as well. I would also be a little concerned about the color although again, this might be the photo.

14-D is relatively low mintage so it might be just on the border of being worth slabbing.

It don't look right to me or it's very weak strike or the photo makes it look that way - it should not be that glossy that's what worries me???

    I AM a slab person.
And since this is a better coin I would get it slabbed for three reasons:
    - Is it legit.
    - Are the surfaces original.
    - What is the professional opinion of its grade.

Great coin!! If it looks as good or better in your hand, then yes go ahead and have it graded.

On a separate note on a 1913 buffalo I always see Type 1 and Type 2. What is the difference, anyone know?

Sorry, but there is no way to provide meaningful advice based on those images. The coin could be AU or unc. and/or cleaned or not.

THIS WAS A TEST. This was made in China!!

Thank you bhp! I was hoping the discussion would go this way. It "don't look right" because this is a Chinese replica! And this post was a test to see who would catch it and who would say something. I purchased several of these from different sellers, and will share some good info with you guys in another thread later tonight. BTW, I did not ask any of them to leave the Replica stamp off. They came that way. I had no communication with the sellers.

I realize the picture has some glare but some of the problems should definitely be recognizable from this size of pics. Most stuff we judge on here are lesser quality and smaller pics than this. Just something to think about.

    To be continued..........
