Found this in my box of half dollars today. This is what you would call a lamination correct?

Looks like a form of damage i don't see any indication of a a lamination error. What is that brown substance anyway weird on the rim?

What it is is a struck through error. A small shard of metal that was a part of the rim and edge was struck into the surface of the coin.

I agree with Bill. I think this is called a rim burr. The punch that punched out the blank was broken at the edge. So when it punched out the blank the broken area left a little tab sticking out of the blank. The upset process pushes the tab up on one side. Then when the coin is struck the tab is struck into the coin. That is why the copper core is showing thru it. I have a half I found with this error. Nice find.

I also agree with Bill. You see these from time to time on Halves especially.

I went to thousands of Kennedy halves ,and never encountered anything like this.

The brown substance to me doesn't look like the copper core beneath the surface to me ,and the strike through had to be very servere to show that layer of copper core..Looks like a form of corrosion

Just my opinion on this specimen.

It looks like a genuine rim bur struck into the coin.

It looks like a genuine rim bur struck into the coin. IMO it is not damage. For a very large rim burr, there was some name like rolled fold tossed around by Error Trends magazine once. If a punching tool really fatigued, it could produce blanks with a large piece of metal on the edge (a large rim burr). The burr would get folded over by the upsetting machine and then get struck into the coin.

    Congrats on the find!
