So recently I got my first us gold coin. Coule never afford any and probably won't be able to get any super-nice one for a while, but I had to treat myself and just have ONE in my collection.

I bought a 1851 $1, holed, for $67.00. somewhere in lower end of vf-20 range, but that's probably wishful thinking, as I'm not good at grading at all. Plus, there's a hole in it.

I know most real collectors won't touch that, so I'm curious if what I paid (67.00) was worth it or did I get hosed.

    Thanks!

I think you did fairly well unless the hole in the coin is 13mm in diameter. :DAnyways, if you can, post a pic as you get better responses with pics.

  4. I can't help you there, gold is out of my price range too. BUT...I know that some countries issued some gold coins that are fairly inexpensive, even downright affordable...But...they are pretty small, from what I've gathered. (This is based just on reading places, never actually seen one yet).

I believe I recall reading that it was India that issued the ones that sell for reasonable prices. That is probably the route I will take if I ever want to get a gold coin. I just can't justify spending so much money on a single coin to get a classic US issue or a better quality/larger world issue, too much other stuff that needs the money first.

It doesn't sound like a bad price at all.

$48.02 was last night's melt value.

A lot of the gold dollars then were treated like novelties, which, well they were created as gift coins etc. So they ended up in jewelry etc. and rarely circulated as a medium.

Doesn't seem like too bad of a price for a gold dollar, even with a hole (as long as the hole isn't too bad or in a weird spot. If you had to sell it I'm not sure what the price for one of these would be on the market or whether you would make or lose a few dollars. Of course, none of that really matters if you know you're going to keep it in your collection, are happy with the price you paid and you like the coin, that's what really matters.

Congrats on getting your first U.S. gold coin!!!!! I remember buying gold for the first time (a 1909 $5 Indian Head coin) and it was so cool just to have one. Still have the coin too.
