I'm finishing up a little work on the computer and after that I will have some breakfast and take off. I'll let you all know how the show was with a comprehensive report via this thread later in the day if I feel up for it, if not, tonight it'll get done. Thanks!
Okay, time for the 2009 Van Nuys Coin Show report by yours truly, BNB!!!! Arrived at 11:00ish from Santa Monica. Walked in, paid my $3 fee, and saw the show. Very very small venue, but very personable. I spoke to a dealer about my 1908-d no motto and the dealer + customer agreed that it is an AU-55+ uncleaned, totally authentic. Went to a few other dealers and some said AU-58/MS. So, that's that. Mike arrived(Finally got his tire fixed after a flat) at around 12 pm and we met up. We also met up with brad on this forum. Mike and I did the rounds a few times asking dealers questions, trying to sell, etc. The overall vibe of the show was kinda slow and the crowd died out towards 2:00+ onward. Some dealers I noticed packed up early. I officially(well, sorta) became respected by a few dealers when I went to sell some coins and told them of my limited successes on ebay. I gave/received business cards and plan to hopefully do some business down the road, maybe even set up one day I ended buying some nickel cardboard holders for my hobos and 2 ancient roman coins for $90 for both.. Pics are on the way. Overall the show is a B because there was the typical stuff being sold, typical dealer talk, and same ole same ole. Now things are becoming a routine the more I go to shows so at least I learn what's hot and what's not.. Boy, the 1995-w Silver eagle.. GORGEOUS.. Wish I had money for one. Mike did okay too but I'm sure he'll piggy back on this thread so he can explain in detail what he bought and /or sold. I stayed from 11 am to close(4 pm) and time flew by fast. I will be at Buena park next week so I hope to see you all there. Now onto the pics,
Now Ancients aren't my thing, but I feel that I should own two just because I should. $50 from nice older lady dealer near front entrance of Van Nuys Show, Augustus OBV $50 from nice older lady dealer near front entrance of Van Nuys Show, Augustus REV $75 from nice older lady dealer near front entrance of Van Nuys Show, Augustus OBV $75 from nice older lady dealer near front entrance of Van Nuys Show, Augustus REV
So yeah, I planned on being there around opening, but pulling out of my carport I immediately realized I had a flat. Lovely... Fortunately I was able to get out the compressor and air it up. Seemed to be holding air well enough to limp to Costco for a quick fix. Definitely buy your tires at Costco!!! Not only are they relatively cheap, but they are open on Sunday to fix issues like this!!!! :thumb: Not only that, they replaced the value stem for FREE :thumb::thumb: Anyways, made it to the show around noon and met up with BNB. Also was able to meet acanthite. Always cool to meet up with forum members and put some faces to the names/avatars here :thumb: Overall, the show wasn't that great in my opinion, I'd maybe give it a C-. It's a small show to begin with, which isn't bad in and of itself as sometimes there can be some great deals to be had at the Van Nuys show. However, the dealers there today just didn't seem motivated to buy, sell or trade. Everything offered to them in trade or to sell basically couldn't be sold to them because they would tell you that they could pay at most 10%-20% back of bid (even CAC coins in PCGS/NGC slabs) because they can only sell around bid these days given the current market. Of course, everything in those same dealers' cases was priced well above even the ask prices and when asking about purchasing any of the coins they were of course unwilling to sell at the lower prices they are basing their lowball buy offers on. It became pretty clear to me that most of the dealers were pretty cash poor right now and were only buying coins that they could rip. Fair enough, but please don't basically lie to me when making offers for my coins. That sort of general attitude didn't really make me want to spend lots of money at the show either given that the dealers just didn't seem to want to deal. Of course, my analysis and grade for the show may have been slightly influenced by my 2-3 hour ordeal with my flat tire immediately before and the fact that I was missing the first half of the Bears game to be at the show I'm sure the Buena Park show next weekend will be much better!
Thanks for the reports, guys. Glad to hear that BNB's Saint received positive reviews. Sounds like the dealers (at least some of them) are in a cash crunch.
I gotta say, Mike, your feedback is never short on the honesty! LOL!! Good to see you today and yes, some of the dealer's offers were VERY offensive, typical dealer talk. See ya next week
Good to see you guys at the show. I found only a few coins to buy, was interested in others but prices were too high. I found an IHC RPD variety, Snow-23. And picked up several Peru 1/2 dinero overdates, a 1903/803, a 1898/7, and a 1903/something.
wow not even a mention! what am i ...chopped liver? LOL BNB I will be setup at buena park..be sure to say hi! I am always in the market for saints
