Is it possible to purchase empty cases for silver proof sets? If yes, where? I recently bought a large number of 1999-2005 silver proof sets from eBay and was disappointed to discover that many of them had cracks and breaks in the the plastic cases. Most were well packaged, so I don't believe the damage occurred while in the mail. Most likely the sellers were dumping their unwanted sets and just happened to overlook mentioning the damage in their listings. Nevertheless, is there anywhere I can buy replacement plastic cases? I didn't see them for sale on the US Mint site. Thanks!
Howdy dapperdan - Welcome to the Forum !! Your best bet is likely to watch ebay. Empty cases, boxes etc are often sold there.
You might try watching Coin World or Numismatic News for dealers that are selling a lot of proof singles. Then contact those dealers and see if you can buy some old holders. One possiblity I can think of is Silvertowne. They do a lot of singles and create a lot of NGC multi coin NGC sets.
Put an ad in the "want it now" feature on ebay. If sellers have any, they will contact you. Works great for finding hard-to-find items fast. Want It Now
I purchased a 1999 Silver Proof Set case (empty) with COA from e-bay and it cost me $6.00 plus shipping. There were several on the bidding page at the same time and they were all about the same price.
plastic case with coa and sleeve/box to miker, if you purchase plastic case with coa at $6.00 plus shipping. then, is that include the sleeve/box?. if not, then it is worth very less on your set right now. possibly half.
It was the whole shooting match-the set as it came from the Mint but without the coins. The plastic casees (opened, I don't know how but it was very clean), the COA, and the sleeves.
Hey dapperdan, Go to eBay's advanced search page eBay's Advanced Search In the "Keyword" field put the words CASE and NO (Example: case no) separated by a space between the two words, then choose "Coins" in the pulldown menu of the Catagory field and then hit "Search". You'll find lots of cases you can use with your proof and silver proof sets, since they're all the same from 1999 to 2005.
The words BOX and NO also brought up a different list but you have to sift through more listings that aren't relevant to what you're looking for. Should be easy to find what you're searching for.
Thanks for the information. I'm going to need about ten cases, hopefully I'll be able to find them for a reasonable price on eBay. So far one out of every five cases have arrived cracked, eventhough they were well packaged by the sender. All the coins have been in perfect condition, but the fact that the cases were damaged doesn't make me too happy. The only saving grace is that I bid carefully and got the coins at good prices.
