Sounds like you either have an off center strike or a broad strike - an error coin in other words. Post a pic if you can/
They are common that way - the master hubs needed to be re-dressed by then They are common that way - the master hubs (or dies) needed to be re-dressed by then badly. By 1969 they were and it went away.
By 1968 the master die or master hubb had been used By 1968 the master die or master hubb had been used to the point that the design had started to flatten out and become blurred. On many 1968 cents the motto, profile and Liberty was washing out and merging into the rim, (it was worn out). In 1969 (or late 1968, they modified the entire obv. when I said re-dressing what I meant is that the design elements needed to be sharpened up and or changed/modified. This is done by making a new galvano (large plaster model of the coins design) - or re-dressing an existing one, this is probably where any re-dressing would be done. Remember the Galvano makes the master hubb, (positive image) the master hub makes the master die, (negative image), the master die, (negative) makes the working hubb (positive), then working hubb (positive) makes the working die (negative) in order to make a finished coin (positive). I shortened this up and tried to make it more easy to understand but the die making process is a very complicated/involved and and takes awhile to "get you arms around it". To re-dress a die could means making modifications to any of these at any phase of the die making process to change/correct/sharpen or extend the die life.
WELCOME TO THE FORUM. If your new to coin collecting most of the previous information is rather on the vague side. The best thing to do with your coin is to take a photo, if possible and post that photo here. Verbal explanations by some are different than the actual object.
