I wasn't talking about grading, generally, Adam. ANA grading, or otherwise. I was talking about how the TPGs "grade." That's the context you muffed...

OK, OK, what the hell, you’re right. That’s what I was trying to do. You caught me, pal. Hell, you’re such a bright little thing...

Look, maybe if you think people aren't understanding you, you can try to explain it instead of insulting their intelligence. The way you were going about it seems like you were just trying to get people fired up. Thats why I edited my posts so as not to argue with you. And thats probably why no one else has posted lately. So forget it. I'm going to ignore this thread now. Its not productive.

I have a 2006 Buffalo proof graded a 70 by one of the big two TPGS. Problem is that the label says it's an Eagle.

Hopefully a labeling error and not the result of incompetent graders who don't know the difference between Buffaloes and Eagles.

But even if it is merely a labeling error, how can I feel confident that a PR62 won't get labeled a PF67, do solely to labeling errors?

You can't. One is as likely to happen as the other. And I have little doubt that it would explain under-over grading of some coins.

I agree w/Centdime slab it if it's over $200 value or buy preslabed (PCGS/NGC /ANACS or older ICG slabs). The reason for the high grade modern 69s & 70s is the modern minting methods.Highly polished dies & sand Blasted or acid etched die cameos making them almost perfect or made to order Cameos.Old DMPL were the result of press operators polishing used dies to make cameos where they missed polishing. So yes buy or slab new & old slab DMPLs & modern MS cameos.

Just based on experience, I have learned to focus on the coin not the slab. Slabs can be very deceptive since you are paying for someone else's opinion, and you may not really like what they have to say after all. I've purchased TPG coins labeled MS/PR 70 which had price tags for 70s but were, under examination, really 69s. It's a huge risk since if you buy blind just based on a "number" on the slab you may not be able to resell later to a discerning buyer. I have both a loupe and a simple microscope and a quick examination tells whether the coin is really at the advertised grade in its slab. I've also had experience with some coins which I sent to PCGS where they were very poorly handled and returned to me with their assertion that they met "their" grading standards. I am a collector and I like gems so I have decided I will buy directly from the mint and keep the coins in OGP, and if I purchase a slabbed coin I will examine it closely and decide whether I like the coin enough to keep it or return it. For example I recently purchased a set of NGC PR70 UCAM nickels at a very good price and all the coins were TOP quality-no visible flaws at all. I am very happy with them, even given that NGC coins usually have a lower premium than PCGS. There's way too much hype going around.

Why pay a lot of money for a MS70 when you could get a MS69 for a lot less, and you can't tell the difference? Only thing I can think of, is if you are working on a registry set, and you want your's to have a high ranking.
Modern Slabs can't be trusted, who knows, do the TPG just have a big conveyor belt and randomly select 70's? (Yes I know this isn't true)
I say let the people who do trust these modern coins in modern slabs, continue to buy them. They will learn soon enough.

I hate TPGs!!! I hate them!! I hate them!!!

But I've got seven 2009 Buffs on order which I will immediately forward to a TPG, to be soon followed by the 6 Buff Proofs I will order at High Noon next Thursday.

I HATE THEM, I HATE THEM (fist clenched and face turning blue from holding my breath).

Yes you can trust them as you have no alternative other than to actually look at the coin.

As for buying them? why not just continue to submit them?

    DO NOT SLAB?

currently. you send a coin for slabbing. you might lose some money if you sell it to a dealer. why?

dealers are buying ms69 or proof69 slabbed by popular slab companies at 10% less than raw coin with original box and c.o.a.

dealers are buying ms70 or proof70 almost equal to what you pay for the slab company plus your cost and that coin. not worth at all. you just waist all your effort and money for the benefit of a dealer. example: a raw coin dealer buying from you worth $1,000.00. they gonna buy ms70 from you for $1,050.00. think about it. and anything less than ms70. said ms69. you even losing money. 10% below or $900.00 for your coin. lower than your raw coin at $1,000.00 without being slab.

but when you buy from them. now you see the different prices. the gap is huge from a raw coin.

now the population of a modern slabbed coin were so plentiful. the prices for those slabbed can be crush. just keep your old fashion raw coins. that is my advise.

I think it really depends on your goals weather or not you slab or not
And that really goes for coin or paper!

Alas, the only way TPG's ratings could be trusted 100% of the time, is if they were a independent non-profit organization. As soon as they become a profitable business, their motives become questionable. In order to survive, their bottom line must remain in the black. For self preservation, they will do what is necessary to achieve this. This will leave doubt in many minds.

I see a lot of griping over slabs, and you should definitely should buy the coin, not the slab. However, using NGC or PCGS to grade or most importantly authenticate coins is a good idea. There are a lot of fake 16-D mercs and 09-S VDBs out there. If you read books by Bowers and others, they strongly recommend slabbing that type of coin.
