Understanding ancient coin authentication?

Has anyone who has studied US coin authentication ever tried learning ancient coin authentication? How would I go about learning this? It seems to be alot harder than US gold coin authentication...anyone here have experience with it?

I don't know that it's any harder, it's just different. But I know I aint gonna try it

The best thing you can learn when detecting counterfeits is not a series, but how counterfeits themselves are made. Being able to recognize the methods of production will enable you to recognize 90% of ancient fakes. That will leave only the hand-carved, die struck ones, which require a knowledge of the original style of the coins. Then there's the truly tough fakes. The only way to catch these is to have a specimen from a known fake studio.

The thing that most people have trouble remembering is that this is a scientific process, it can be revised. What is, to the best of our knowledge today, a genuine coin could be fake tomorrow.

Really, you need to be familiar with the coinage itself and have an interest in it if you expect to catch the fakes.
