Hi, I am a new member of Cointalk. I am planing to buy this coin because it looks nice. What grade do you think this coin is? I would appreciate for any help. Thanks.
I am not an expert on these coins so I will not even begin to offer a grade. I will recommend checking this thread Matts counterfeit gold. Wait for someone with more knowledge than me - because I think I see some pitting and possible tool marks on the reverse. I just wanted to recommend this thread hear since this coin looks raw. As I mentioned I am no expert on these coins.
Hi, thank you. I try to make larger pictures. The original ones are 375x375. I resize them to 800x800.
I'm not too keen on the reverse. I see a lot of depressions common on counterfiet pieces but even with those pictures it's not 100% that it's bad
I suppose you mean what appears to be tooling in 'In god we trust' on the reverse? Matt's thread is a real eye-opener on how good these things can be. Looks to be some raised blem's above "D" in "Dollar" as well. No harm done, but isn't kind of ironic the name is "omegafactor" when we're talking about a possible counterfeit gold coin...
The coin is actually graded MS62 by PCGS. I just want people to have an objective look at the coin. The coin is a listing on EBay. The reason why I do this because the seller's asking price for the coin is $990, which I think a little bit high for the coin. So I wonder the coin is premium for the grade or not? Thank you GoldCoinLover and GDJMSP for your concerns. :smile
Well, then either PCGS really dropped the ball IMO or you got a fake coin in a fake slab. I suspect the latter. Let's look at a few things on the reverse. Let's look at the D in DOLLARS first of all. See how part of the letter is missing. And see all the extra raised metal at the top of the letter. Now look at the area around the motto. See how the bottom of the left leg of the of the A in AMERICA is not closed. And the extra metal above the letters O and D in GOD. And the very regular rectangular shape beside the D. Well none of that is supposed to be there. And that letter D missing part of the letter, in checking 2 pages worth of coins on Heritage I can find no example like it. And there is no variety like it listed. Now there is more, but I think that should be enough. And could I be wrong - you bet. But until proven that I am, I'm not gonna think I am.
I noticed the same things Doug, except for the irregularity of the letters. Good sharp eyes there.. And if this is true.. "]Well, then either PCGS really dropped the ball IMO or you got a fake coin in a fake slab. I suspect the latter." I sure hope the chinese haven't begun to start to counterfeit US Gold coins in NGC/PCGS slabs! That would be my worst nightmare..
Curious as to how you had those photos without the slab. Or did you chop those to delete the slab? The reason I ask is I'd like to see the so called slab if that coin is in fact in a slab. If so, some of the distortions may be due to the slab itself. However, there is this growing amount of faked coins in faked slabbs on the increase all the time. Could you post the entire photos?
I provide the link to the EBay listing. I am not sure it is against the forum rules or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-5-GOLD-INDIAN-MS62-PCGS_W0QQitemZ190334256914QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2c50ce4712&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 The seller has over 50k feedbacks, so I think it is safe to buy from him. I had never known people can tell a lot from pictures. You all open my eyes. Thanks. :hail:
I've seen this seller on ebay alot, often. He seems to sell a bunch of coins, especially US gold of all different types.
Welcome to the forum. The coin looks genuine to me, I can see it as an MS62 and the seller is legitimate. However, with a bit of searching, you should be able to acquire one in the $850 range. Don't pay extra in the hopes that one is PQ, especially if you can't make such a determination on your own and/or would have to do so based on images, as opposed to in-hand inspection.
Mark if you think the coin is genuine then can you please explain the things I pointed out ? I'm more than willing to listen.
Doug, I don't know if the things you noted are distortions from the images or something else. But either way, the surfaces of the coin look genuine, the grade looks believable, the holder looks OK and the seller is legitimate. In the big picture, I believe that the coin is genuine.
Hi, Mark. I am actually looking for a Half Indian in $800-850 range. Do you think this coin is a PQ MS62? I compare this coin to other coins from this seller(just based on pictures) and it seems that this coin looks better, even better than some of his MS63 coins. What do you think?
