Interesting thoughts put forth by the op, I do not know exactly why there would be more men involved in the hobby than women.

Obviously men are more interested in coins generally but why?

    21 Male here as well.
I am actually quite surprised with the age posts here. I am encouraged by the young ages, doesn't seem to be too popular to the young folks round here.
Here's me yesterday and today setting up at my first show, ;)
I think I'll probably make a topic about my experience at the show, it was an eye opener and a blast!

Well I am in the majority as it seems...54 no where near Dead yet!

I think that the reason you see so many men in this hobby at the 45 to almost Dead age group is because most men including myself have more disposable income now than when we were much younger!

In the technology age, it is only the few young folks who are influenced into such a hobby as ours. Perhaps from their Parents or relative...who knows?

How many replies to threads like in the Intro section have you seen that read like this:

Starting collecting when I was 10, gave it up now I am 35 and have my Dad's coins...interested again...

I think this hobby will remain focused on the 35-Dead age group for a very very long time....How many teenagers do you know who can plop down $500 bucks an up for a really nice coin? Needless to say $5000 for a excellent piece of Paper Money? Think about it, $500 for a Great Morgan, Gold bullion or $150 for a Ipod, Blackberry or Video Game player?

I recently held a YN Contest and wanted to get a minimum of 15 players...man did that ever go bad! I had only 5 and the prizes I gave out were pretty nice...I too thought that many YN were here and would jump all over the essay! Man was I wrong!
Congrats again to the 5 guy's who took the time to do it!

Wow, so I guess when I go to my first coin show I should not dress to pick up women darn it, that's the only reason I was going :D.

46 been seriously collecting/hoarding for 2 years, however have always saved every wheatback and all other weird/old coinage I have ever received. As with alot here I have more disposable income now, and at the time the stock market was plummeting so I also started as an investment. Additionally since I have 3 children starting college 2 years apart each beginning next year I figured the people doing the grants etc would not know about the coins therefore could not count this against my assets and my children would be more competitive in this arena.

After 28 years on submarines (no females) I am used to not having them around much and actually enjoy it.

short young numismatist story: About a year ago while visiting my mother her friend came over and during the course of the conversation we discussed coin collecting. He asked if it would be ok to give each of my children a morgan dollar to see if it would ignite some interest in the hobby explaining they were low grade $5 bin varieties. I agreed and we called the children in, there were 15 coins setting on the table and the children were instructed they could each choose just one and were given a short history lesson on the series. My oldest daughter went first and immeadiately selected the oldest coin my son was next and selected the shiniest coin, my youngest daughter came up to the table looked at the coins asked Dan if he had a red book and a loupe, asked her Nana if she could use her computer and reading light and commenced to spending an hour examining the coins and chose the one that was actually worth the most. She goes with me to the coin dealer all the time now and helps me sort through my coins. In her room she proudly displays her completed P+D state quarter set, P+D presidential and Sac dollar set, LMC set with proofs and complete Jefferson nickel set with proofs back to 55. She keeps her unfinished LWC and Washington quarters in my safe and is talking about starting on SBA dollars. I am very proud of her, even though she has no desire to join the coin forums.

Absolutely no attitude, just a response to your comments about what can already be done and a straightforward question.

Discovering women have been the ruin of many a potentially good coin collector! Only until you have found that very rare woman that can at least tolerate your obsessions can you truly find blissful happiness as a collector.

Male. Just turned 29 this month.

I don't really know if there are any other collectors around me because it's not something most people want to advertise for security purposes. The guy I go to shows with who also just got back in and is very interested in the hobby will be turning 29 this year as well.

I collected on my own without any other influence when I was in my early teens. I lost interest because I couldn't afford to buy anything at the time. I went years without ever thinking about the hobby.

One day last year, I accidentally put two and two together and realized that I still liked coins and now could afford to buy some stuff. So it is a much more enjoyable hobby now. Especially with the internet available and an ability to comprehend all the lingo and grading, better than when I was a kid.

Wow, I seem to be on the high end of the age scale.
I'm 67 and started collecting in about 1955.

I agree that an aging collector base would be tough for the hobby BUT given the youth of many of the people in here we may not be hurting as badly as we think.

If any of you collect stamps I think you've probably noticed that's a hobby in decline.
Even the charts in Linn's Stamp News shows the stamp market beginning to dip.

The problem is that this is the sort of thread where those who don't fit the age range the OP gave are more likely to respond, so the replies may be quite skewed to the exceptions rather than really showing that young people make up a decent percentage of this hobby. We'll have to wait for the poll to see if that's the case.

In any case, I'm 23-year-old male.

I will say from the replies to the thread that coin collecting is still attracting many of the younger generation. I'm kind of surprised by the very few replies from women. And I thought that women had a predisposition to gather or collect. If that were the case, you would expect that women would outnumber men in this hobby. Perhaps, we've finally broken that misconception.

    Really? I'm not at all.

I wish I could interest my wife in it but she only tolerates it. She doesn't understand why anybody would want a dirty old coin.

I've found in general, most women I know are interested in babies and not much else. When it comes to spending money, they want a new car. They want a new refrigerator. They want jewelry. They want flowers sent to work. All things that take that thin slice of disposable income away from hobbies.

Females like to socialize more. They're interested in the most mundane aspects of their friend's lives. Just look at Facebook and Myspace. To me, that's a waste of time. Most people are very boring to me. I like learning about things.

This is not a hobby that many women will ever be interested in. If there are a few out there that are, and are also young and even half way attractive, they will be very popular on this forum. :D

21 year old male, been collecting seriously for four or five years now, ancients for three.

I honestly don't think that prices are overwhelmingly prohibitive for younger collectors. Plenty of kids today have zero expenses - parents pay for food, housing, school, transport. Any money that they do make can go to coins. Of course, getting them interested is the hard part.
