I know I have been asking a lot of identification questions lately because I have been going through all my random foreign coins. Well, hopefully this will be a thread that is a little more enjoyable than identification. Some of the coins that I have been going through are coins that my grandmother gave me. My grandfather as well as other members of her family who I never met had traveled the world in the military long before I was born and had brought back coins as souvenirs. She had ended up with many of them and felt I was the one who they should be passed down to because I was the only coin collector in the family. So, before she passed away she gave me a couple small metal containers with random coins and tokens in them. Probably the most valuable was a 1854 Type 2 $1 Gold (which now resides in a PCGS Genuine slab)...but one of my favorites is this common Franc. I think this is an absolutely beautiful design to begin with but it this example also has nice original luster remaining and lovely natural toning to it. So, here is the 1917 Franc.
Nice Ceres, I think the American "Walker" was patterned after this French coin. Here is what your coin looks like all polished up. Traci she is beautiful.
Wow, that is a beautiful coin. I also have a couple 50 centimes examples from my grandma but they aren't as nice as my 1 Franc. GD, that is a gorgeous example. It makes me want to put together a type of the design (from what I have seen there are 3 denominations...is that correct)? Hey, what would you guys grade this coin as? I have no knowledge about the grading of these.
Your coins appaears to have some wear but it's hard to judge how much based on the pics because of the dark toning. But I'd guess it's at least XF if not AU. I know this design was issued in 1 and 2 francs - don't remember if there was a 3rd or not.
I have 3 examples of it in a 50 centimes denomination (all 1918). They were also part of that small group that my grandmother gave me. The one denomination I don't have is 2 francs. Is there an online source that deals in a lot of European slabbed coins? I have looked on Heritage and eBay and it always seems like they have very few.
