Here's another odd coin from my dad's collection. He thought it was simply a fake but it's way to good for that, and why bother in any case? It appears to me to be an aluminum quarter struck on the government dies. I'm a total newbe and don't have a hint what gives with this one.
Why do you think the coin is aluminum? Can you weigh it? A regular quarter will weigh about 5.67 grams. An aluminum one would be a lot lighter. Look at the rim and see if you can see the copper sandwich.
I’ve seen some fake quarters made of lead zinc and tin. Does the rim have a raised seam as if it was casted? Or is it reed?
When a person trys to fake a coin he trys to make it as good as he can...so why do you say its too good??...I have seen fake coins that look so real the only thing that gave then away was the weight. As for the "why bother in any case?"...many people try faking a common coin before they start on the rarer ones...I had a fake 1914-P cent..the rare date is 1914-D... Speedy
Whatever the metal may be it's, not the typical copper core of that year . Yes the edge is reeded. I'll see if I can get it weighed.
