PERSEPHONE GOLD COIN - REAL OR FAKE?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by JAMES RONDINONE, Mar 17, 2021.

  1. I am looking at the front and back of an ancient gold coin. The question is, is it real? Can someone give me their best guess? Thanks. s-l1600 (1).jpg s-l1600.jpg

I'm no expert in ancient gold, but in my opinion, it's a fake. For starters, I see what appears to be casting bubbles on the surface. Your photos aren't the best, but it appears to be a plated replica. For example, the damage on the reverse appears to have exposed the base-metal core. Moreover, the details appear weaker than that of a genuine specimen. Lastly, buying ancient gold coins without provenance or TPG certification is a surefire way to be burned financially.

These are sold as reproduction, plated in gold. Usually they are stamp with the"copy" mark. On yours, it is almost completely vanished...

It does not look good to me. I am no expert but the grainy look
Would put me off. Also what the Alphabet guy says sounds right that has a picture above my comment.
