ok i found this item on ebay. when i saw the title of the auction i figured i would check it out. click on the auction and see the picture of this coin. it is a 2009 D Lincoln Cent Log Cabin NGC MS66 RD. now with all those spots how could it have gotten MS66?? here is one i just picked up. same grade but different TPG, they look 100% better. am i wrong in thinking the first one should be graded lower. just curious. any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :thumb:
sOMEONE MADE A SIGNIFICANT GRADING CHOICE TO CALL THIS A ms66. wAS THIS ONE OF THEIR PROMOTIONAL LABELS FOR THE lINCOLN 4 COIN SET? (darn caps lock) I agree, they should pull this one and refund the $$ or resupply a true MS66 to the owner. Bruce
"In graders we trust"!!! "In graders we trust"!!! These people along with the submitters would grade their momma if they thought it would bring them more $$$. Keep buying and supporting them folks, they are laughing all the way to the bank!
Return it to Ngc they will send you a replacement.I had to do that with my 1982 set they hate bad press and that coin is very bad for the image!
Your all missing the fact that the TPGS thought it was raining the day Lincoln was born and actually made this coin to represent raining. :goofer:
Hmmmmm - I guess nobody realizes that those spots often develop on the coin after is has already been slabbed. That said, if they are carbon spots and not the result of somebody sneezing on the coin. Then NGC and PCGS both will slab and often do slab these coins, and grade them as high as MS66 and often even higher, even if the spots are on the coin when the grading is done. edit - I suppose I should mention that the first modern Lincoln ever graded by PCGS as PF70 DCAM, had spots on it when it was graded.
Didn't we go over all the spotting on the various 2009 cent coins this time last year... and probably several times since they hit the market? Plus the topic of slabbed coins toning, developing spots and such after being graded and sealed, isn't a new topic either. It's mentioned quite often in these threads. Comes as no surprize to me to see this coin in the OP and it doesn't diminish NGCs service/abilities, in my eyes. The issue is one I blame more on the US Mint. Also, didn't the LN6 Chronicles 5-coin proof set come with a printed insert that indicated the Mint applied a treatment to coins to prevent to toning but acknowledged spots could develop? Regardless, the 2009 Lincolns are fraught with spots that develop on them.
Ehh, I couldn't say anything about the proof you mention, but I know the first non-proof struck MS70 graded Lincoln (PCGS, IIRC, slabbed it, and it came from a mint set) developed a spot on it after a month or so, and the man who purchased it got it regraded as an MS69, and a $15k check to cover the mistake.
