Can some one tally up what we have please. proof, silver proof, uncirculated, business strikes, satin finishes. Where do you get the uncirculated business strikes? Does this mean that each coin has 4 types of finishes? Or do we have 5 finishes.

I buy the proof set, silver proof set, and the uncirculated set from the mint each year. I guess I'm missing something.:desk: Please pardon my noobness.

The US Mint will offer the 2009 Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Coin Set on April 2, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET.

This set will include one uncirculated coin from the Philadelphia and Denver Mint for each of the 2009 Presidential Dollar Coins. In past sets, the coins have been the satin finish versions of the Presidential Dollars found in Mint Sets, as opposed to regular circulation strikes. The eight coins come in a custom holder which includes biographical sketches of each President.

The following coins will be included:

    2009 P & D William Henry Harrison Presidential Dollars
    2009 P & D John Tyler Presidential Dollars
    2009 P & D James K. Polk Presidential Dollars
    2009 P & D Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollars

Collectors can actually obtain these eight coins in the full 2009 Uncirculated Mint Set, which is currently scheduled to be released by the US Mint in the summer. It's generally a better value to buy the full annual set, however the US Mint sells a surprisingly large number of the separate Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Sets. To date, they have sold over 75,000 units of the 2008 set, which still remains on sale at the time of writing this post.

The sets are priced at $15.95 each and the US Mint's product page can be found here, although ordering options won't be available until the start of sales.

I think the only way to get business strike Presidential Dollars from the mint is to buy rolls. All uncirulated mint set are "satins" since it think 2006. My experience is it tends to vary. I'll get a set where P's are real frosty looking and the D's are shinny like business strikes.

True, Flyer was but the OP wasn't.

As for telling the difference between the Satin Finish coins and what you can get at the bank? Simple.
The Satin Finish coins are the ones which look crappier!;)

Business Strike coins are coins which are intended for circulation. They receive a single strike.

Satin Finish coins are not intended for circulation and are considered "collectibles" by the US Mint. The dies receive the same treatment as the other collectibles sold by the mint such as the Silver Eagles and commemoratives. I expect its a light sandblasting but do not know for sure. They also receive a single strike, but under a higher tonnage.

Proof coins are not intended for circulation and are considered collectibles. The dies are polished to a mirror finish and then laser etched to produce that "cameo" effect. The planchets are polished to a mirror finish and each coin receives at least two strikes under higher tonnage presses.

Silver Proof Presidential Dollar coins are exactly the same as what is in the regular proof sets. (i.e. same metal content)

The US Mint sells collectible rolls of presidential dollars which are simply business strike coins wrapped in special paper.

The US Mint also sells "Direct Ship" rolls in 10 rolls boxes which are the same wrap as what you get at the banks.

So, what you have are Proof coins, Satin Finish coins and regular old business strike coins intended for circulation but each of these can be "wrapped" in different product packaging.

Hey Thanks for clearing that up for me, I appreciate the response. Ive looked over my 07, 08 uncirculated sets and they seem to be in good shape, no real issues like the photos posted prior. I am still waiting for my 09's like everyone else. I guess high quality business strikes are the hardest to get individually for the modern stuff.

I guess my confusion was that I think of "uncirculated" as a grade and more specifically I believed it to be uncirculated business strike put in a package for sale. The mint is using "uncirculated" to identify the satin finish sets. Is this weird to anyone else? Why not call it what it is?
