    Porsche2007,
A belated welcome. Folks here are pretty nice, almost without exception. The exceptions generally don't stay around very long- so I'd give it a second go and remember that until folks "know" you, and you get a feel for the board, to make a special attempt not to offend or take offense.

I don't think your question about the matte finish designation for the 1997p nickel ever got answered, save by Porsche, and of course his answer relates to matte proofs, which haven't appeared on regular US proofs in quite some time. tHe 1997P nickels were NOT issued as proofs, but a special matte uncirculated finish was included in the 1997 botanic gardens sets from the mint. I haven't seen these, but assume that they are similar in appearance to this years uncirculated mint sets with the satin finish. anyone know for sure? http://www.coinfacts.com/nickels/jefferson_nickels/jefferson_nickels.html

    Midas-
I agree that it is time for a design change on the dime. However I have a complete set of roosies, and it is nice to have a set where it is affordable to do so. The series is a nice size in terms of numer of coins, etc.

Not exactly - but it is the only non bullion coin produced at West Point that actually has the W mint mark.

The West Point mint has been used countless times to produce business strike coins when the P & D mints are busy - but the coins never carry the W mint mark.

By the way - I got the pop-ups too. And I have 'em turned off on my computer. They are annoying.

Porsche2007 Thanks for the info on the coins. The links worked just fine and I didn't get any pop-ups. I'd like to welcome you to the forum! And there is a little function here on cointalk that you might want to take advantage of...under UserCP you can put members such as...edited on an ignore list and you never have to read any of his posts again. edited - let it die

What type of coins do you like to collect anyway???

You are right SF! Now I'd like to know what the heck botanic gardens sets are?
I didn't realize that this thread was going to evolve into so much. I thought that I'd just get a straight answer and that'd be it. Thanks for your thoughts and information. I appreciate it.

It was a commemorative set issued in '97 which included the $1 coin, a matte Jeff nickel and $1 note. There was another in '93 - the Thomas Jefferson set which included the $1 coin, matte Jeff nickel and $2 note.

    Confused

I just purchased a 1996 Proof Mint Set and a 1996 Silver Proof Mint Set. Neither of these had the 1996-W.

Were there just special 1996 Sets that had these dimes?

No - but because the dimes were packaged separately - sadly the majority of them have been removed and sold separately.

You didn't get it because you purchased PROOF sets and the W dimes came only in the Uncirculated Mint Sets.

I also purchased the P and D Mint Sets and just looked, No W. I guess it was removed from the set or something.

My Dansco album has a hole for the 1996-W BU dime so I would guess that it should have been in the Mint Set vice a Proof Set unless it was in the Premium Proof Set (the only one I didn't get).

Be careful with these W dimes in the mint packaging. They are adept at hiding.

The mint put them in various places inside and owners do move them. They'll
often be inside the COA and are very easily missed. I've found that the dime
is there about 90 to 95% of the time.

Exiled, the 1996 W is in a seperate wrapper about 2.5" x 2.5". The sleeves for the P and D sets can sometimes hide the dime. Or someone needed it more than you.

Darn! I guess I've been ripped off.

At least I have one now. I was in one of the local coin shops and they had one for $18, so I snatched it up.

Thank you! I am always looking through people's coins, and exchanging pennies, nickels, quarters... NEVER DIMES because 1) Who would be demented enough to spend a Mercury Dime, and 2) ROSIE'S ARE SO BORING AND HAVE NOTHING SIGNIFIGANT ABOUT THEM [aside from '96-W]! Mercuries are very attractive have something special about them (not the silver or value... :)

Since starting this thread Oh so long ago, I have purchased 2 mint sets and they both had the 1996-W dime included. One had a very small nick on the rim but otherwise they both seem in almost perfect condition.
Now if I could just lay my hands on a 1998-S matte Kennedy for under 250.00 I'd be done with my Kennedy collection.

    Yahoo!!! I Found It!!!

Thanks to cladking and miker I found my 1996-w Roosevelt dime. It was inside the folded cardboard with President Roosevelt's picture and title "50th Anniversary of the Roosevelt dime". It is in a clear 2 x 2 with ms66-67 on a red round sticky on the outside.

Does anybody know if the mint put these stickies on or maybe the dealer I got it from?

I guess I could send it in for grading since I have one in my collection.

That is not how it came from the mint...a dealer put the stickies on.

MOEN1305 I have that 1998-S matte Kennedy you are needing but.....I gave it to my wife as an Xmas present a few years ago so I am lucky just to get to see it once in a while let alone get to hold it! I bought her both coins in the set and after I did the price fell. Never FAILS!!!

Oh Reeeeeeeally! I have been bidding on them for a while and they usually sell for about 250.00 on ebay. If you paid less than that, you did well...or your wife did well so to speak. :)
