Wire Rim Coins. Before you dive into the depth and breadth of this subject, let's open the Numismatic Terms Dictionary, find wire rim and read the definition:

    wire rim

"The knife-like projection seen on some coin rims created when metal flows between the collar and the dies. Also, slang for the wire edge Indian Head Eagle ($10) of 1907."

It further defines the term thusly:

"The 1907 Indian Head Eagle for which only 500 coins were struck. Technically, a pattern. This design featured a fine wire rim and surfaces unlike any other United States issue."

Know you know all wire rim coins are errors. But, I want to remind you some 1907 Gold Eagles you see may have a rounded rim (on purpose).

If you are like me, when I saw the words wire rim I thought about the 1907 Gold Double Eagle. Here's a photo courtesy of Coin Link:

Some of you will now point out the United States Mint struck other coins resulting in wire rims. You are right, but a "trivia" article is not meant to talk about or show you every wire rim coin produced in the U. S. nor all those minted by every country. However I hope you will enjoy seeing a few of these.

Besides silver wartime Nickels, here's one you may not know of (a Presidential Dollar) courtesy of coins.about.com:

As most of you know, from reading my past trivia posts, this is where I present an example of the theme minted by a neighboring country. This time it's our Northern neighbor, Canada. Photo courtesy of Personal Telefonica. Canada does not fall short in wire rim coins, but I selected a 1953 Silver Dollar to show you. As you know the 1953 has two varieties of strikes (no shoulder fold and shoulder fold). Here's the photo:

To see the rest of the coins I first thank Coin Archives. Secondly I ask for your help. After the Coin Archives' page comes online you may need to click on the coin in order to read all its text. Then you can again click the photo for a close-up enlargement.

From the Paris Mint (Monnie de Paree) here's a French Cambodia 1860 Piastre:

If its gold you like best, take a look at this Turkey 100 Piastres:

All wire rim coins aren't round. They are not all made of gold either. Here's a British India 1/2 Anna:

Yor're going to have to do a little more to see the next example. When the web page comes up scroll down to the second photo of a Russia Platinum 6 Rubles. It's a proof. The business strike doesn't have a wire rim, but the proof does. Note the text denoting this is a "partial" wire rim coin. Thought you ought to know there are "partial" wire rim coins out there.

The next coins displaying full wire rims are Ethiopian. One is a Werk denomination coin. The other 2 are 1/4 Werk coins. You may click on one or all three coins. It's up to you:

    Hope you enjoyed....
