Wire Rim Coins. Before you dive into the depth and breadth of this subject, let's open the Numismatic Terms Dictionary, find wire rim and read the definition: wire rim "The knife-like projection seen on some coin rims created when metal flows between the collar and the dies. Also, slang for the wire edge Indian Head Eagle ($10) of 1907." It further defines the term thusly: "The 1907 Indian Head Eagle for which only 500 coins were struck. Technically, a pattern. This design featured a fine wire rim and surfaces unlike any other United States issue." Know you know all wire rim coins are errors. But, I want to remind you some 1907 Gold Eagles you see may have a rounded rim (on purpose).
