Sunday I went to a meeting of the Louisville Coin Club. Very nice folks; I think I’ll head back to the next meeting with a membership application and dues. One gentleman gave a presentation on multiple grading standards for large cents (the one used by catalogs, and the one used by everyone else, if I correctly followed the gist of the presentation). There was an auction, and for $5.50 I got three books:

-The Official Price Guide to Minting Errors and Varieties (5th ed.) by Alan Herbert
-The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins (51st ed., 1997)
-Type Three Double Eagles 1877-1907: A Numismatic History and Analysis

I had fun. I was easily the youngest person there, and probably half the thirty or so attendees were close to twice my age, or more. They made me stand and introduce myself, and I was made to feel very welcome.:smile

Hot dog....I didn't know you were near Louisville....I go to their show they have every year in the fall!
I hope to go again but my sister is going to be having a baby about the same time so I don't know if "uncle" can go to the show or not :D :D

That's great! Sounds like a winner.

Our local club has an auction at meetings as well, and I sometimes come away with some interesting items for either myself or my daughter. The Junior Club even got into the act with an auction at their last meeting of the school year.

I am already looking forward to when our club starts up again after Summer Vacation.

Bluegill...hey, I'm from the 'Ville as well!!

Although I know of them, I've never been to a meeting of the Louisville Coin Club. When and where do they meet?

I went to a few meetings of the Derby City Coin Club last year, and even joined, but I coach softball on Mondays so I haven't been able to go the last few months. My experience there, however, was similar to yours. Everyone was nice, but also older. I enjoyed the auctions, and picked up a few nice Morgans for a great price. I attended one of the shows that they do, and they have member dinners a couple of times a year, but I haven't been able to make one of those.

Let me know when the next meeting is, and I'll try to meet you there!

:) Maestro, when I saw your thread on finding friends who collect coins, the first thing I did was look to see if you had a location listed.

Yesterday I met the president, I think, of the Derby City Coin Club, who is also a member of the Louisville Coin Club; he told me I should come by, but I don't think I can get to more than one club, and the LCC meeting times are easier.

For anyone else in the Louisville area who might be interested, the Louisville Coin Club meets the third Sunday of each month, 2-4:00, at the Holiday Inn on Broadway by JCC.

I don't know if ya'll are interested or not but there is going to be a small show (under 10 tables) down past Lexington...I think it would be about a 2 hour trip for ya'll.
If ya'll want info let me know...

Back in '59 I started a Coin Club in Elyria, Ohio (my home city then), joined one in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (just 18 miles East of Elyria bordered with Cleveland), and joined another in Norwalk, Ohio (20 miles West of Elyria). All meetings were in different weeks of the month (all starting times began at 7:30. Attended all of them.

Used to order coins from B. Max Mehl in Texas, B.C Sayers, Jr in Tenneesee, and a few other dealers no longer in business. (Collecting coins back in those days was a passion).

    Congrats Bluegill !
One of those books you bought was written by a member of my Mesa AZ coin club. It is Alan Herbert and I see him regularly, he was instrumental in getting the ANA convention here in '07.
Coin clubs rock and I will be joining the Phoenix CC this month as well as the Mesa.

Just so ya'll know, this is an old thread.
I haven't seen Bluegill around here for along time, though I did get to meet him in person at the KY Coin show a few years ago.

I really wish I had a coin club near me. The closest one is about 100 miles away.

    Wow, old home week.

Bluegill, welcome to the club. I've been a member of LCC since 1975 when I was the youngest member of the club. From the subject of the talk it was probably given by Harry Tileson, a past president and one of the early mebers of the club (possible one of the founding members but I'm not sure.) Harry is a great guy.

Maestro, good to hear from a fellow member of the Derby City Club, I'm one of the founding members.

Unfortunately I now live too far away to attend the meetings of either club, but I do keep up my dues. I haven't attended the Derby City show for years now, and I've missed the Kentucky State Show that the LCC club hosts for the past two years as well.

We have some around me but no one wants to join. Way to much crime in this area. People are afraid to have to give out to much personal info at those clubs here.

  16. I too wish I had one that was convienent to get to. The closest one to me is more then an hour away and well into Westchester County, which I never go to, and when I do, never farther then Peekskill. I would like to attend one, but I don't know if it will be possible.

For one of my other hobbies, joining the local club was the best thing I ever did with that hobby and coin collecting would probably be about the same!

Noticed your post concerning B. Max Mehl and B.C. Sayers, Jr. dated 2009. I, too, came into coin collecting
about the time Mehl finished his career and for many years I bought coins from B. C. Sayers, Jr. in Johnson City,
Tennessee as a result of his running a small ad in Popular Mechanics. My folks bought me rare coins from him
for Christmas presents a number of times. B.C. died some years ago and his family tried their hand at the business,
but faded from the scene, I believe.
