Hi folks, I just started collecting a few months ago at the ripe age of 43. I started collecting morgan dollars, and peace dollars. I want to buy very nice eye appealing coins. I started out with a local dealer, and moved to a monthly show. I have learned a lot. I have been buying unc morgan dollars. But, I want to move up the scale to MS-60+. I don't see much in the local coin shops. I went to the show, but they had just a few. I have seen the dealer ads in coin world, and coin value. They seem to have what I want, but I wanted to see if you folks had good dealings with these coin dealers. I was wondering if you could give me advice. Also I saw these two carson city morgan dollars in a shop today, and wondered if I should buy them. They are a fine graded coin, and the owner wants $89 for a 1890 CC morgan. the eye appeal is alright, but it is a CC. I have been thinking about the coin all night, and wondering if it is worth getting it at that grade.
Many dealers offer high grade Morgans as well as auction houses. Try www.teletrade.com or www.coinfinders.com or ken.schlosser gold coins...or do a search for coin auctions on the net...always buy the highest grade you can afford! RickieB
You can look for high grade Morgans in PCGS Slabs on eBay! I would advise to check out the Seller's Feedback rating before bidding and seek one that has a high Feedback rating. If you find a really nice coin that you want but the Selller has less than perfect Feedback rating, then read through much of the Feedback comments posted for this Seller and especially the Neutral and Negative Feedback comments to see if they got a bum rap or really deserved it. You can then decide on whether you can trust this Seller! Frank
Carson City coins are becoming much harder to locate at fair prices at this time. Both my wife and I seldom leave a CC coin lay regardless of its condition. I have also noticed the unc. Morgans, at least at my dealer, don't lie very long if and when he can buy them so we buy those every time he gets them (when we have the extra cash on hand). We collect just about everything and the safest place I have found in coins is in the Morgans as long as you buy smart and willing to hold them.
I would be inclined to buy both of the 1890cc for $89, particularly if they have pretty good eye appeal. The Carson City mint seems to be the most desirable. I suspect [but can't prove] that within a few years it will be virtually impossible to buy any CC morgan for under $100 unless it is pretty severely worn or damaged. There is just too much history embedded in each of them.
Wonderful Morgans I have been purchasing some MS65 Morgans from SteveEstes.com for some time now, and must say they are superior coins. Steve tells it like it is, and his eye appeal comparrisons are right on the money. His MS64 and MS63 coins also look very good. He will send you a picture of the coin you are purchasing if he does not have that particular photo up on his website. Some of his lower graded coins don't have the photos posted. Jim
