1859-indian head

    Hi , just picked this up today, I guess its the only year without a shield. pretty cool--BILL--- with a closer look, does this look like an error? just noticed it. what do ya think??

    Nice pickup , the '59 is high on my want list as I have the other two types , just need the no shield .

    is the (E) in cent supposed to look like that?

    I don't think it's an error. I could just be from wear or possibly a grease filled die causing the E to fade out a bit. But, I don't think it makes the coin worth anymore or anything.

    Nice coin by the way! The 1859 IHC is on my list.

    The disfigured "E" appears to be due to either a combination of strike/wear and a planchet flaw or damage, causing the deep line that intersects the lower bar of the "E".

    Yea , I see it now , makes the E look like a F , is that what you mean .

    The "E" is on the other side of the coin from the indian's cheek.
    The cheek is the highest point on the obverse, so it takes a lot of metal to bring it up.
    If the striking pressure is just a bit weak, something's got to give.
    In this case the bottom of the "E", and if you look closely enough the left leg of the "N" looks weak at the bottom too.
