If your Brother-in-Law still wears them...I wouldn't consider them "uncirculated"...if ya know what I mean? :kewl: Seriously though, a lot depends on whether they're in a screwtop bezel or soldered on.
OK...undamaged coins. From your description (no picture) I would guess they're around EF-40. Since someone decided to make earrings out of them, I'm guessing they're the high mintage 1853P (4,076,051). Uncirculated gold content is 0.04837 ounces (times 2)...or almost $97 with gold at $1000/Oz. With a little wear on them...$90 may represent the bullion price. PCGS Price Guide list the 1853 EF-40 at $265 each. That's for a graded, encapsulated coin. Yours...if they're undamaged EF-40s would retail for a bit less than that...I'm guessing around $200-$225 each. That's retail...you may get close to that on eBay, but not from a dealer. I haven't sold coins to a dealer in years...I have no idea what a dealer would offer today (used to be about 50% of retail). Personally, if I had them and wanted to sell, I would be satisfied with anything over $200 each...that still may be a bit on the high side. My gut feeling it may be closer to $150 each. If 100 people read this post, I'm sure you'll get 101 opinions. This is mine. Hope it helps...:thumb:
No opinion without photos because there are a lot of fake/fantasy gold dollar earrings out there. I'm also not willing to assume no damage or harsh cleaning.
Bullion coins IMHO. Even a bezel leaves discernible marks on a coin, and once clinched, it is forever just another jewelry item.
I like the 5oz. idea except you could put it in the lip instead of the ear. It would be like one of the tribal things I saw on National Geographic. If I had ear rings like that a relative would be stealing them while I was sleeping!!!:computer::hatch:
If they are real they will never bring anything close to $200 If they are real they will never bring anything close to $200 - today if they walked in our show you would count it a good day (if real) to get $90 each, a very good day indeed.
