At my coin club I went to last week I had a real eye opening experience finding out a little bit about pennies. I know absolutely nothing about pennies except I think they're a really cool looking coin.

At one time I thought about collecting pennies b/c I thought that they wouldn't cost that much. Oh boy was I wrong! Some of them can get really pricey.

Does anyone collect these? How high can they go in price? I thought the only expensive one was a 1909 VDB. This site is great for learning and trying to retain facts. :D

Lots of people. That is a big reason they are so expensive.

The most expensive was $340,000 for a 1944-S steel penny - one of a kind. For a regular mint coin, a 1926-S sold for $150,000.

The 1914-D becomes more expensive than the S VDB at about the uncirculated level. It and several others are more expensive than the S VDB at the higher levels.

BTW, your referenced has every indicator to stay away. Thagt seller has lousy feedback, trying to sell a raw coin that, if certified to his description, would be worth $1,000's. Why is it not certified?

Oh yeah!! Bad example of a penny to buy, I picked it out for the high price. I never buy a coin that high off of the bay. See you never know when you will learn something on this forum. A good example of someone selling a bunk coin!!

14-D is very tough in mint state, 09-S VDB is common

14-D is very tough in mint state, 09-S VDB is common.

Learning about Lincoln's is an eye opening experience to be sure.
The toughest of all is 14-D and 22 no "D" die in mint state - the 26-S does not even come close if we are just talking "mint state".
The 26-S is the highest priced regular issue Lincoln in MS-65 Red, why? because there is only one known but in MS-63, 64 it is common as is the 09-S VDB as is the 55 doubled die.

It took me awhile to learn these little facts.
Go to any show and you will always find 09-S VDB's, 55-doubled dies and and probably up to a few dozen of each in mint state - they are always availible and the 26-S is to but not as readily availible in red mint state.
Do the same thing with the 14-D and 22 "no D" and you will learn that "these coin are rare'.

Others that are very rare are, 1990 Proof "no S" - 1915-P in gem grades red, 1972-p ddo #4 (in any grade) and believe or not to a lessor degree the 1954-P in gem grades - I challenge anyone to try and find a MS-66 Red 1954-P at any show.

1910-S, 11-S, 12-S, and 13-S are tough to find in original color as many of the "D's" are also.

Learning about these coins is a world of fun and challenge and well worth the effort.

If you want to learn more about the Lincoln Cent, there are some great informational web sites out there. www.coppercoins.com for one. Another is the Lincoln Cent Resource web site. Not sure how to link that one.
What you need too is a copy of the Red Book.

I agree, and you can also pick up a copy of the Red Book "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents" by Q. David Bowers. If you want to know the complete history of the Lincoln Cent.

Yikes! that coin is circulated, cleaned, scratched, and has active verdigris on the reverse. Someone just plunked down 1,000 for it.

    Where did that come from. Here is what eBay says;

That says he has used the same ID for 3+ years.

BTW, to be found under "Feedback Profile" to the right of his star ratings is "View more options". It sites a pop up menu which includes "View ID History"

While it would be foolish to implicate this seller in any wrong doing, and I have not so far, I ask that you toolhaus the seller ShockerCents. I cannot remember another, but will when I am not thnking about it. FullRedGems comes to mind:rolleyes:

" Some " Ebayers use multi ID's, but a true student of the univercity of the bay begins to recognise picture styles and listing formats....it's so easy if you have no life and countless hours as I use to.....I don't have the luxury of time anymore.

Remember Kingo? SeatedKeys? Early Keys? How many times did I spank that fool....? I have since lost track because I lost interest, thats all.
