craigslist , ran across this gold coin on craigslist today I'am starting to see more & more coins being listed on craigslist . I'am wondering if you have a better chance of finding some better coins on craigslist as opposed to ebay :eek:hya: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/atq/1373067446.html

That looks like it could be a really nice coin, but I wouldn't touch it without significantly better pictures. As a matter of fact, I don't think I'd go for these types at all unless certified.

Harsh treatment of the surfaces - cleaned or worse. Hard to tell if it's counterfeit. Clearly this coin comes from a troubled childhood. No way it will slab.

My guess, based on the images, is that it's genuine, but lightly cleaned. And I'm not convinced it wouldn't slab.

Just the obverse looks counterfeit to me but it is hard to tell. You would need to weigh it, take measurements etc... I wouldn't buy a coin like that off of Craigs list.

Looks pretty good to me. The price seems about right as well for a VF/XF grade, I don't like the e-bay like wording where it could be worth X graded. If that was the case why would he turn down an extra $40K? This leads me to beleive he has shopped the coin around and is already trying to milk it for a few extra $$$.

To answer the OP question, yes the current economic environment will bring out new coins to the market, whether they will be on Craigs list or not who knows.

    I agree with CrustyCoins.
He knows the coin is not worth that.
So trying to get what he can.
Gee, I think I would be able to wait a month to get 26K!!

The one thing craigslist has going for itself is at least in your local area you can go & see the coin in person or even yet arrange to meet the seller at a local coin dealer in your area and actually hold and examine the coin , something that ebay can't provide. The one downside to ebay for me has always been not being able to hold the coin in your hands , its like ordering from a catalogue & looking at pics. : )

Crusty I also think you are right on the money, hes made the rounds & will get what he can for this coin & avoiding ebay altogether. :D

Hey! Thats mine coin you guys are talking about! It's very real & not a fake. I took it to a dealer & he offer me $3,000 dollars without me even asking him if I wanted to sell it. I've dealt with dealers in the past & they always try to give you much less then what the coin is worth. So I knew that this coin has much value. I know it's worth more then $4,000 but thats what I ask for it. I'm 100% sure it is real. If any of you wanna meet & see the coin for yourself & if you are very serious about buying it, then we can meet somewhere public. The coin is safe in a safety vault right now. Any questions my number is in the add. Thanks. I feel flattered to have my coin on this site.

And yes ebay is sucks! I don't want to deal with the % thing or having to send it in the mail. I'd rather meet face to face & sell the coin the old fashion way. These type of coins can be valued in different ways & depending on who you sell it to. For example a dealer would give you what he thinks the base value is, but a collector would give you the full value of the coin because they need to have it. I could send this coin to PCGS, which would be a great idea, but then I'd have to mail it & wait 3 weeks. Sending something of this value in the mail is not a good idea for me. And I'm sure this coin is much better then a VF/XF grade. So $4,000 is actually a cheap price.

It looks no better than Xf to me. But, if it is that and not badly cleaned or damaged, your asking price seems fair. I live in your area - please feel free to send me your contact information through a private message.

Welcome to the CT forum COINS_IN_SD , as I said in my post I'am seeing more & more folks selling coins on craigslist & for me personally I think its a very good idea. I agree with you in that its much better to see the coin in person than to see it on ebay and only have pictures to go by. There are a lot of folks starting to sell on craigslist & I wish you luck in selling your coin. I hope you'll keep posting on coin talk and let us know how your coin sale goes. :)

It hasn't been cleaned at all. It's actually alittle dirty but not damaged. It may look alittle damaged because it is dirty. But never the less it is in beautiful condition for a coin as old as it is. All features on the coin are clear & vivid. If you are interested in buying it, then we can meet & you can have a look at the coin. My cell number is in the add.

Thanks Pappy-o I appriciate you posting my add on here. I have actually recieved many calls about this coin. And the last, most recent call was great news! A woman called & told me that she has cleints that pay up $100,000 or more for coins like these & that I won't get much trying to sell it for retail so I'm going to look into that. But I will let you know when I do actually sell this coin. I have sold coins in the past on craigslist & it takes time but I am happy with the out comes. it's free unlike ebay & thats the best part. I've sold morgan dollars, a CC morgan graded by PCGS, 1 saintgaudens $20 gold coin from 1923 graded by PCGS, & a few other coins so far.

I just sent the message below to the seller/Erik. If I hear back from him, I will consider and treat his reply as private. Please feel free to comment on my proposal, even if you don't like it.;)

    "Hi Erik and thanks.

For some reason, I can't get through on the number you listed. But I have a proposal for you, which I think would be the fairest way to proceed.

We can meet at a mutually agreeable location - I live in San Diego, near ...........

I will look at the coin and let you know if I think it would grade at PCGS. If so, I would submit it under my PCGS account via express (approximately 5 business days) service which would cost $58, plus postage both ways, expenses that I would pay for. If it doesn' grade, I don't buy it and I am out the fees, while you are out nothing.

If it grades VF20 or VF 25, I would pay $3250
If it grades VF30 I would pay $3500
If it grades VF35 I would pay $3750
If it grades XF40 I would pay $4250
If it grades XF45 I would pay $4750
If it grades AU50 or higher (I doubt it would) I would pay $6500.

That way, neither of us would get a bad or great deal. I can give you references from my 30 years, full time in the business, including from the owner of NGC, PCGS, Heritage, just about any major dealer. I have acquired an excellent reputation because I am straight and fair with people, instead of trying to get rich in my dealings.

Please let me know what you think and feel free to call me at.......

    Thanks,
    Mark"
