Does anyone know where one could find a picture of a 1830s+ 10 dollar note from a bank in New Orelans. I have always heard that the reason they call the south dixie is that duirng the bank crises in 1837 a bank in new orelans did not go busto and everyone wanted one of there ten dollar bills, and That is where Dixie comes from. I also would really like one if anyone knows where to get them.
I think the Numismatist did a terrific little article about the origin of the word Dixie or Dixies as they related to these ten dollar bank notes. The story vaguely is floating around in my head, but I am sure if you go to the ANA site and you are a member, you should be able to do a search for this article. I found it very interesting. I will see if I can find a link to it and post it here.
The bank was known as the Citizens Bank of New Orleans, also there is another bank, Canal Bank that has very very many remainder notes from that era that are very affordable today and a great item to collect. They are all well designed, well printed notes.
Thanks guys. Now that I know what I am looking for I can go about researching and finding some to buy. I am thinking about putting together some form of framable mini collection involving coins form the NO mint some of these, maybe a bank from Montgomery and savanna and mobile. I am speculating that such a thing even exist. I have a fealing it will take me years to do this and a bunch of money, but oh well. The fun is in realing in a fish not eating it right? Or is that way to eastern?
Canal and Citizens notes are actually very very common, because both banks survived into the National Bank era, the former is now part of New Orleans Commercial bank or something similar. All the notes that are available are remainders, were never actually issued. Otherwise if the banks had gone bust you would have had circulated issued notes instead of remainders, which are still available even in sheets of four notes, I owned a complete set of sheets from the Canal Bank a few years ago.
Scottish: Thats Cool. I looked on eBay and could not find any. Where would one go to find something like this? I guess the obvious would be to a local dealer, but the guys I deal with normally don't have a lot of paper on hand. Also does anyone know about other notes from southern banks in the same time period? I think what I want is "type set" type deal. Maybe like a denomination from every state like ten, fl, ga , al, ect. I would really like one from Savannah and Mobile Charleston get all the port cities
