I want to tone the &^%# out of a silver dollar

Get a zip lock bag, fill it with H2S gas from a very local source and insert the coin. Best to dip the coin first so all of the surface is reactive. Zip the bag. Refill as necessary.

!! Put the gas in the bag for the coin , DO NOT put the coin into the source of the gas. !!

Here's harshly cleaned 8 TF Morgan I toned just for the halibut. Got it for about $8, it was already ruined so I couldn't have ruined it any further. :crying: :headbang:



I used some toning stuff I got on ebay. :whistle:

 

Ionize a silver/cop/nic 90% silver soin for about 6 hours. This will draw the copper to the surface and give you an interesting pattern. We Yanks always wanted to do this to George III...... :desk: Traci

 

There are numerous methods to tone a coin. For some real experts, try the TCforum. That is a forum for TonedCoins. There you would hear all sorts of methods, some good and as usual, some bad.
1. Take matches, grind them up, place in a paper bag, place the coin in there also and let stand in the Sun for a few days.
2. Take Onions, Garlic, one egg and grind or mix all together. Allow to dry, place the coin in that mixture. Periodically check for over toning.
3. If you have a clay type flower pot around you, take some dirt, mix with hot pepper seeds, add lime juice, place in the pot and place the coin in that mixture for a few days.
4. Time consuming is to spit on that coin and then place on the wooden part of a window sill. Add spit daily.
5. Some, not all, dish soaps will speed toning. Place dish soap on a dish, add that coin, place outside in the Sun. If you add sugar, molasses, maple syrup, you will also catch a lot of flies and bees. They get the dish soap on thier wings and can't fly. Nothing to do with the coin though.
6. As already noted different amounts of heat at different distances in an oven will create toning. Just not in a Microwave oven.
7. Send the coin to someone that does not like toned coins.

What is the damage to it? There might be some people...like myself, for one...who would love to have it in their collection even with the damage, BUT not with toning...

chris, this weekend was a nightmare. I had to work all weeekend and didn't get a chance to do much of anything. I am on call tomorrow night adn have coin club on Tuesday night so things are kinda busy up until Wednesday. Hopefully I can get some pics up of the before coin soon.

I wouldnt bet on the potato working,out of curiousity i tried it with a beautiful Merc dime or two.They came out just as they went in and that was a bbq coal fire.

 

Depends on what type of Potato you know. Supposed to work best with the red ones. Doesn't work well with Idaho ones. Also, a little depends on the soil the potato was grown. And if you eat the Dime by mistake, you'll find when it does pass, the stomach acids would have cleaned off any toning.

 

Per several requests from fellow coin talk members, I wanted to get "before" pics up before I started to go to town on this poor baby. Soooooo here are the before pics. I will keep everyone posted periodically on what damage I can do to this coin in order to make it beautiful once again.
