Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

And you know, more people get bent out of shape over having to gain/lose that hour than they need to. It's so easy to adjust to, and you don't (or shouldn't) suffer any lasting ill effects.

On another note, I plan to really celebrate St. Pats since it was 47years ago on that date that I met the woman I married. Met her at a St. Pat's coffeehouse!

I think its high time to stop this nonsense of changing the clocks. It would be way nicer to have an extra hour of daylight in the Winter. Changing the clocks was a DUMB idea.

 

But necessary for the times. Look up the original reason for doing so.

My mother and father are from Dublin... moved to Canada after their marriage in 1963. They also named me "Sean" - so they saw something in me....

As per the usual plan I have the 18th booked off work to recover after the celebrations . Our Pubs just opened a couple of weeks ago - so we're all ready for the big day!!

I grew up in Toronto - which has an incredible Irish history. In 1847 alone 38,000 Irish men, women and children arrived at the city's port - fleeing the Irish Famine.
To put this event into perspective the population of Toronto in 1847 was 20,000.

My favorite hockey team is the Toronto Maple Leafs... they used to be called the Toronto St. Pats - Stanley Cup Champions exactly 100 years ago - in 1921.

Here is another Saint Mark, with the Doge of Venice Pietro Gradenigo. Owing to its war with the Papal State, Venice was placed under interdict in 1309. When Gradenigo died in 1311, he was buried without religious ceremonies, in an unmarked grave.

The name of Swithun (sometimes spelled Swithin) is best known today for a British weather lore proverb, which says that if it rains on St. Swithun's day, 15 July, it will rain for 40 days:
"St Swithun's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain nae mare".
A Buckinghamshire variation has:
"If on St Swithun's day it really pours,
You're better off to stay indoors".

I still feel strange posting coins with this particular saint in a St. Patrick's Day thread, but since @panzerman gave his permission, I'll do so. No offense to anyone!

As I've mentioned many times before, I sold the vast majority of my British crowns and gold coins back in 2014/2015 -- when the gold coins were worth about 1/10 of what they'd be worth now, so I prefer not to give it too much thought! -- but did keep a few of the less valuable ones. Here are some of each, showing reverses with St. George & the Dragon.

Been nearly 30 years for them as well... and they were never called the St. Pats!
