9/11 Commemorative Coin!!

Yeah!! finally there will be a tribute coin!! That will be great as even in tragedy we need to remember what happened and to mark history. Coins mark history, that's what they do and I will be buying as fast as I can.

I just read about this idea and I thought I would post the information to see about the support the coin would receive. I will buy one or many for certain, links below. Anyone?

would be a great idea, and a coin that i believe would sell alot!!!! I just hope they would create a design truly emblematic of the event! Let see what happens next!!!

I tell ya what's amazing - bipartisan anything. A positive sign.

 

Got to be better than that 'junk' piece that the national collectors mint put out a couple of years ago......

 

Lets just hope they don't goof up the design.

They really need to do a high relief version of something with the Trade Towers on them.

They should put the Pentagon on reverse. Not sure how to incorporate the Shanksville, PA crash? I hope they really take their time with this one, it should be special.

 

I flew home from Denver on 9-11-2009 and on both flights the Attendants held a few moments silence as we ascended into the skies.

Made me think of it all over again....and the first attack on American soil!
The Marine in me will never turn the other cheek, sorry to say it but I support the War...If I were young enough to go again, I would in a heart beat!

Ugggh! That's what I'm worried about. I'm really hoping for the best with this coin. I hope they are able to come up with something creative. Maybe the sky line with the beams of light going up in the towers' places? I think that would be excellent for the obverse. I don't think the actual buildings should be on the coin, personally.

I'm glad the mint is finally coming out with one. I expect to own one. If it's limited to only 500,000 as has been the case, I suspect these will sell out quickly.

 

I would buy one.
I wonder if any of the proceeds will go to some organization?

oops just found it in the bill text: ...to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center to support the operations and maintenance of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center following its completion.

 

I think they should have the towers with a pair of firefighters somewhere on the design on the obverse to symbolise the heroism that was apparent that day, and a wreath surrounding a flag at half mast on the reverse to symbolise the memorial.

 

2,000,000 maiximum mintage for 9/11 commemorative silver dollar. will it be too many?.

 

Yes, it will be worth the price of silver 100 years from now.

 

Tom: Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad to see you back. You enjoyed coin talk before this started and I hope you will afterwords. Elaine and Taurus: IMHO It is way to little. They should sell as many as possible. I think to commodify a memorial is a terrible thing. This is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause. There are so many coins to buy as investments why this one? IMO they should charge a larger premium for this one and allow people to write it off as a charitable donation. EDIT: This is really strange the software for the board is taking the spacing out of my post. It seems like I can no longer separate out my comments. Makes for hard reading, and that's the last thing i need

 

I really like the idea of a 9/11 coin on its tenth anniversary. I'll buy a couple. I hope they can incorporate the WTC, pentagon, and the PA crash scenes into the coin without making it too gaudy. edited

 

You may be on to something there...how about a series of coins instead of just one. Any talk of a gold coin? That would be a nice addition to your pile, Phil!

At the time, I got some enamalled, colorized silver rounds through my AL post. Each one commemorating a different aspect of the rescue...Figher Fighters, Police, Rescue Workers, etc. It'll be nice to have a coin(s) from the US Mint to add to the collection.

They better be careful of the design, it is way too soon to bring this coin out and it could fall into the area of bad taste very easily.

Yakapoo: When you said AL did you mean the American Legion. I am not a veteran, even though several finds and family members are/where. My father is a retired Navy Coremen. I had the Honor and Privilege to participate in Boys State when I was in high school and it was an amazing experience. I ran an unsuccessful campaign for Governor, but was awarded senator from my city and got to argue a bill in my state house. It is a memory I still hold on to.

 

Can you give an example of a design you think might be in bad taste?
I have some commemorative silver rounds that came out shortly after 9-11 and they all seem (to me, anyway) to be in very good taste.
