Hey Ya'll I have been looking off and on for a Capped Die cent...I was outbidded on one and it seems like they are harder to find because I don't see many. My question....I have seen what is called a Capped Die and it looks like a blank planchet on one side...I have also seen what was called a Capped Die that looked like a Bottle Cap on one side...it stood out like a cap while the other looked normal......what one is right??? Speedy
I think the one that looks like a bottle cap is a "Capped Die Error" and the other one is a "Struck through a capped die error". I sold this "struck through capped die error on ebay for $17.00.
They're both right Speedy - but they do have different names. The one that looks like a blank planchet on one side and normally struck coin on the other side is a capped die strike - this is the planchet/coin that is struck by a die with another planchet stuck over the die. The one that looks like, or can look like, a bottle cap is the die cap - this is the planchet/coin that was actually stuck over top of the die itself and eventually came off.
