Thought this was worth posting since I am seeing quite a lot of threads on the subject. http://www.fakecoin.info/
Thanks Sweety, very, very helpful. I have literally hundreds of Chinese fake coins. I like to drill a hole in em and use them for washers. Traci
You won't lose any money by using that rule. It would be unfair to honest sellers in China to assume everything coming from there is fake. However, for the coins I look at on eBay (silver trade dollars and Spanish reales from 1700-1900), virtually everything I see from China is fake, or at least cannot be confirmed as authentic. And those questionable coins which receive no bids are put up again and again until they sell, often under the name of a different seller. The results overwhelmingly advise against buying. Be aware that people are buying those fakes (perhaps knowing full well what they are), and now they are being put up again on eBay from sellers in the US and Europe.
Such articles are OK but lately the Chinese have become a lot more sofisticated in thier counterfeiting. For example many of the Silver coins are made with high grades of Silver since they are being sold as collectors items they bring in enough profit to make it plosible to utilize real materials. Then too they have become well aware of our reliance on TPGS's to authenticate coins so now they are also couterfeiting those slabs and the coins. Many people have such counterfeit coins and slabs and really don't know that that is what they are. One dealer I know broke open a slab to send the coin to a more well known TPGS and that coin came back a fake. Note too if you go to Google and type in TPGS's you would find almost 100 of them and many are just someone in thier basement. Then too, as we all should know, the Chinese and many other countries just change a letter on an item and sell it here. If you look around for example you would find batteries like Dinocell, Durasell, Duriecell, etc. And no law against that either.
One of the problems is that they (chinese) donot think that they are doing anything wrong. Culture clash ,I guess
I highly doubt they think counterfeiting collector coins is perfectly O.K. Ireally wish I had the time, equipment, and nerve to return the favor to coin collectors in their country! I'd take a loss, just to prove my love for the people ruining our hobby.
Believe it. All those commies over there have no moral conscience whatsoever. Whether it's destroying the environment, the U.S. economy, animal cruelty (I'm talking KFC is kind compared to what happens there) or creating fakes of anything to fool 'the westerners' in order to make a quick buck. All they care about is a little money in their pocket, no matter how they get it. Counterfeiting foreign coins and currency is completely legal in their country. They're just not allowed to fake their own currency. Then the government will crack down on them. You gotta love globalization! :vanish:
Yes it is. Another good place to look to recognize the counterfeit fakes. This is the on-line photo archive of all of the counterfeits produced by the Chinese counterfeiter who has been giving the interviews with Coin World. It shows over 800 counterfeits he has produced. The higher the page number the longer ago he made them. The earlier ones are much cruder than the more recent ones. http://www.bubbleshare.com/users/profile/305237?page=1 This website is closing down 11/15/09.
