It is widely known that Francis Henning counterfeited Jefferson Nickels. Probably the most famous example is his 1944 "no P" counterfriet because it is so easily identified. I have read that he made counterfeits dated: 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947, and 1953. Does anyone know if anymore years are known to be counterfeited by him? Also, as of now...what are the current prices that Henning Nickels go for. I think it would be fun to try and assemble a set of them. Also, do all years have the distinct looped R on the reverse?
Usually comes up a few times a year, then fades away, then pops up again. Usually only among coin people though. Occationally it is mentioned on the news and then for a while it all pops up again. Sort of like that guy way, way back that made the fake dollar bills and mispelled Washington.
I know a guy in Marquette MI that has one in his display case, but of course, won't sell it. I want one also. I collect these so call "Black Cabinet Coins"
They aren't that rare, but for some reason I have had a hard time finding general information out about them. But, he produced thousands of them.
So, does anyone know if these 5 years are all the known years he made counterfeits of and what they might sell for?
I have seen them sell for $40-50, but I was always a minute late on the trigger when I have seen them on BST boards etc. I have read accounts that somewhere upwards of a quarter million of them were produced before he was caught. Some of them were apparently good enough that it is purported that the Secret Service and the US Mint determined that they could just be released into circulation because they were of the correct weight, dimensions and characteristics. The one I saw, the dealer said he had gotten it in change as a YN back in the 1950's.
