I just picked this dude up this past weekend at a local coin show. I love seeing copper coins from the 1700's with some red still showing.
Neat piece! The "F" is the Frankfurt ("Frankfort" is in KY for example ) mintmark used at that time, and the "P B" to the left and right are the initials of Philipp Bunsen, mintmaster in Frankfurt in those years. Bunsen also used a mere "B" or "PCB" (Philipp Christian Bunsen) on other coins. By the way, there is an interesting connection to the US. Bunsen was mintmaster until 1790. His successor, so to say, was his son Johann Georg Bunsen (until 1833). Now this Bunsen had two sons who emigrated to the then New World: Gustav Bunsen fought for Texan independence and was killed near San Patricio, TX. His brother Georg was apparently in some education board in Illinois ... Christian
I also like it. I notice that the chicken has 8 tail feathers. There was some debate over this in the States in 1878 and I think the correct number of tail feathers was found to be 7. Seriously, I like the coin. Very best regards, collect89
Well, in the CoA the eagle looks a little more, hmm, elegant. By the way, if a German city's CoA shows (primarily or only) an eagle, that usually means it was a free city, ie. a state or country of its own. Frankfurt was such a free city until the Prussian occupation in 1866. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_City_of_Frankfurt Christian
I thought about it and I packed this little guy and a friend up and sent them off to NGC this morning. Just out of curiosity mostly to see what they would say about this piece grade wise.
