I can think of a few. Trays in coin cabinets, tissue or folded paper and small cloth sacks. You don't really here or see much on the old ways of storage.
Nice coin cabinet. Small paper envelopes, folded paper, and the cloth envelope were the most common. All are still used to some extent in the EAC community.
The first coin album was developed by Joseph Kent Post, in 1934. He was a Wisconsin engineer. But, he did not have the backing to continue development & sales. So, He sold the idea to Whitman Publishing, where a young RS Yeoman, (Dick Yeo) was put in charge of development and sales. Prior to that: Cabinets and envelopes were used.
wood is bad for coins for several reasons. check out this recent thread and for a link to a maker of such cases.
I want one too. I know a firm in the UK that makes nice ones but in the past he has refused to ship overseas. A check on his website though no longer lists that restriction. I've considered going to the local high school and seeing if any of the students is looking for a project. Show them the designs of what I want and commissioning the construction.
