If you won the lottery, which complete set would you want?

I'm day dreaming as the Florida lottery heads toward $40 million.

Let's say you won $10 million dollars (before taxes) and you could own any one complete coin set, which would it be? Now keep in mind that $10 million dollars is before taxes and the 2nd cousins showing up on your door. You always hear about idiot winners that go broke after a couple of years...unbelieveable!

For me, I would want the Lincoln set (1909 to 1959) in minimum MS64RD grades or better. That would cost in my estimate around $200,000 give or take.

I am just curious to see what others would buy, coin related that is, for not just a specific coin,...but for a complete set!

Well, I guess a complete 1933 US coin set would just about wipe out the winnings ;)

Hmmm....dreaming big here, I'd love a set of every US Silver dollar made, Flowing Hair to Peace, UNC and proof, all mint marks possible. And just to have a few moderns in the mix, I'd finish it off a complete set of ASE's, again including every mint mark UNC and Proof possible.

Guess I'd better try for the NY Mega ($82 million) ...the Florida may not be enough...LOL

    careful what you wish for.

something in me says that winning the lottery, and spending that money on coins, would be the worst thing to happen to my collection possible... sure, the value would go up, but all those sets that take time and strategy to afford would be completed - without the time or strategy... It would kill my interest - not even to mention the liability and security required for appropriate storage.

I have a feeling I wouldn't alter my spending, much, one way or the other - even if I had millions

Well, for me, I would love to also have the complete Lincoln cents 1909-present set in at least MS-63 also, but if I had anything extra to spend, I would also get the 1856, 1857, 1858 SL and 1858 LL Flying Eagle cents in MS grades. I love that design!

    Someone else's idea ...

What do you mean by "set"? We easily fall into the ideas handed to us by the numismatic press.

If I won the lotto and put nominally unlimited money into "coins" then I would want U.S. Type keys: the 1909-S VDB and 1877 cents, 1917-D Mercury Dime, and so on. Also, certain other numismatic items are also compelling, such as colonial U.S. Paper, and, of course, those German City View Thalers. Checks and drafts would be interesting. In the MichMatist, I just published an article from Tom Fort about a draft signed by Edward Gibbon. Stock certificates from famous corporations would also be a must. All in all, I would not put more than $1 million into these sorts of things -- and then only to balance equal and opposite investments in gold and silver. Those two broad areas -- numismatics and bullion -- would balance equal and opposite holdings in fiduciaries and equities (stocks).

Also, you have to realize that wealth of that magnitude will change your life. Most people are crushed by it. They "dream" of being instantly and hugely rich, but they do not think about it. I do.

I would consider only a fraction -- say $3 million -- to be "mine" in that sense. The other $10 million brings with it a burden of responsibility. (40/3 = 13.9; if you take the payout and pay your taxes up front, you get about 1/3 of the gross.) Even if you think you would "spend it all on yourself" you still need to do that in some way that does not destroy you. Best, of course, is to view that $10 million as your opportunity to make the world at least a little better.

Buying certain numismatic rarities fits into that for me. While I would buy "Key Coins" they would only be a fraction and would be a fallback position akin to savings. In order to help make the world a better place, I would make other numismatic investments, for instance, by creating an endowment for the American Numismatic Society.

    I'm small minded, a complete Buff Set 1913 - 1938...all varieties and mm's.

If I were to win the lottery, I would try to accululate as many silver dollars as two million dollars would allow starting with the Morgan dollars I do not own. Then a very high grade Lafayette dollar and then the Peace dollars. Then I would start all over again.
The fun of collecting is that it is like treasure hunting. I am not certain I would stop collecting once I acquired a complet set.

hmmm, this got me thinking, what would it cost to put Eliasberg's collection back together? A lot more than a few million, but still, that would be cool!

Peace dollars and ASE's in rolls.
might as well do Franklin halves and kennedy halves in rolls too.

I'm not much on old school. I like Morgan's, don't get me wrong, but I prefer Dead Presidents. I know, I know I am the minority. I really do like the newer coinage.

Because of this I would buy a complete proof set and mint set of Franklins and Kennedys. I would also look into Ikes, SBA's and Sacs. I realize that even 1 million is probably enough to get these but I'd just keep buying them at about 1 a day till the money was gone.

I'd do either a complete set of Liberty DEs or a complete set of Morgans, which ever could be more readily and realistically obtained with $10 million. I'd prefer the DEs..... :D

    Hey everyone!
I'm new on the forum, but I think the MS-64Rd Lincoln set would be awesome, but also the Type set has sparked my interested. I've almost finished the set, but I think it would be awesome to have a nice MS grade of each type. Maybe have a Type set but with the keys. :) Instead of just finding the common dated ones.

    Hey Daniel---glad to see you!
I know a guy that had a MS type set...some of the pieces were PF too...I think the 2cent piece was proof and some of the others...most of the time he would only put in Key Dates because that is what he thought looked best...but he also remembers buying $20 gold pieces for under $35 each....sadly he collection was stolen...

I would get a complete commem set ( modern and classic, especially the classic )

but i would do it in a nifty way, i would pick several coin dealers in each state, then DRIVE to each of the coin dealers and take a super-extended vacation.

I am pretty sure that if i visit 50+ dealers i can get a complete commem set in A+ condition...

oh, and for Hawaii i would rent a boat to ship my vehicle there ;)

and if you are wondering what my vehicle would be... it would be a brand new dodge 3500 heavy duty 4X4 cummins turbo diesel hauling a flatbed loaded with a suped up viper ;)
