When I got my Dad's collection, there were 12 or so coin tubes filled with nickels. I looked at them a little bit, but it appeared about half were westward journey circulated nickels and the others were circulated nickels from the 50s and late 40s. Well, I finally searched them and mixed in all of the older ones were 32 war nickels. It was if he didn't know they were silver since they were all mixed in (instead of having one tube dedicated to them). Anyway, I was very excited about this unexpected find and just needed to share with someone who cares about this stuff. Thanks for listening and thanks Dad.
That is great, I love the war nickels. The silver content often allows for spectacular toning on these.
They are circulated, some with very cool toning....I will post a picture as soon as I can figure out this photobucket thing.......any pictures I now post get reduced so I need to go photbucket. And, I found one more last night.
Nice find. See if you can make a partial set or maybe a complete set of the eleven war nickels. The lowest mintage is the 1943-D. You can check the 1943-P nickels for the doubled eye and 3 over 2 date. There is also a 1945-P doubled reverse.
I already had all of the Dansco holes filled in my Jeff album, but I thought I only had 4 or 5 extras, finding these 33 more was just a great surprise!!! But, it is a good idea to see if I have a 2nd set....
that's cool, I can remember finding war nickels in my change when I was a little kid. I never did amass a hoard of them however.
